    Hi Nivedita,

Yes it is hard bt if you r doing the right things than winter will instead help u in losing weight.

beacause of the cold wether, the body stuggles to increase its temperature (auto immune response)hence raising the BMR from usual. which is what the body exactly needs to lose weight, but the tough thing is that .. as the BMR rises so does our appetite ... n it seems hard to resist the warmth of a samosa or a garam jallebi ... and we r left with increased weight by the end of the season.what we dont understand is if we excersise just a little or just take a routine walk or do yoga or climb stairs even in the cozyness of our home or just buy a skipping rope n skip for 15 min 2 times a day, the BMR will rise even higher leading to weight loss.. and the hunger pangs can be well taken care of by hot and nutritious variety of soups .. or even green tea..Eat five to six small meals each day to cut down on food cravings and overeating. What you need to do is just try to keep to your routine as much as possible and not let Winter drag you down. Picking foods that tie in with the Holiday Season but are low in fat and fairly healthy,(http://www.lifemojo.com/healthy-recipes) will prevent you putting on huge amounts of weight.

    hi nidhi,
there are indeed a lot of standard set diets. especially the low carb ones. In the west , carbs are often eaten stripped of fiber: processed flour is used in their bread, cakes, pasta, etc. the western diets lack the great Indian concept of dal, sabji ,roti, as the major meal ,which incorporates a lot of fibre .in the west , vegetables come mostly in the form of salads camouflaged with croutons and fattening dressings. So the good carb content in their diet is negligible.low carb diets leads to depletion of serotonin,Hence irritability, restlessness , depression and anxiety are the common results in Indians following such diets.

In India , avoiding carbs on such high levels is not needed. If u look at the Indian foods like poha, upma, veg stuffed paratha, idlis, dosas, dhoklas, dal, roti ,sabji, rajma, etc. most of our carbs arent processed, and they retain their fibre, vit b and minerals. The primary foods that we use in India, our cooking methods and our food combinations all work together at increasing the fibre and the nutrient content of the food. Hence restriction of carbs which are high in glycemic index and zero on nutrient is alone enough. Eg - cakes, pasteries, sugar, alcohol, desserts, chocolates, aerated beverages ,cookies and other deep fried items like samosa, pakoras, bhujias and vadas.

the diet should also contain food items from all the food groups mentioned in the indian food pyramid. this help in effective and healthy weight loss.

    hi vijay ,
    1) improper postures during yoga give other major effects on your body .. thn actually increasing your weight .. hence right postures are very important.

    2) yes , the weight gain that you mentioned can be becoz of the
(a)alcohol .. and the snacks that accompany, that u have mentioned are high calorie.
(b)water retention can be a problem .. which can be due to high salt intake or soda.. that u use with alcohol .. or it can be because of your already more than the normal weight status.
(c)though you are doing yoga and walking it is important to follow a correct workout pattern .. i.e. the first 15 min as warm up ,where in the body utilises the ready glucose for energy , the next 15 min is for breakdown of glycogen into glucose for energy, n from the 31st min to 45th min the body breaks fat for energy.. so this period is opf utmost importance .. it is advisable to do a higher intensity exercise in this period so that the fat stores cld be properly broken down. if you are doing yoga in this period ... inspite of all the efoorts , much weight loss will not be seen..

3)about the diet pattern- breakfast .. wheat flakes is a better option to corn flakes .. n brown bread to the white one.

lunch and dinner - phulka is a better option to masala roti ..

please note nicotine in cigarettes interferes with our metabolism .. hence sometimes some ppl lose weight and also sometimes it makes some people gain weight .. depending on person to person .. so if ur intake is high .. that can be another reason.
not to mention abt alcohol !!!

    4) yes hypothyroidism can be genetic .. there is nothing wrong to get a test done for satisfaction .. coz hypo secretion of the thyroid hormones lead to serious weight problems if correct measures are not taken.

    hi again vijay !!
leptos basically for curbing your appetite and obelit interferes in the way of fat digestion and helps in excreting the fat intaken without actually letting the body digest it .. though these two pills are very efficient in their function ..but if you are looking for a long term goal, is advisable to choose a safer and a healtier way to weight loss without following any artificial method, if you happen to be obese .. rather it will be easy for you to lose weight by sticking to a healthy regime of diet and exercise combination. you seem to be extremly motivated to lose weight, all you need is correct guidance. please seek a professional help for the same ..

    hea vijay,
other than motivation, profession advice would also have various other benefit , like for eg.. you can lose weight in the first one or two months following the same pattern but after that no matter how religiously u follow that same pattern, much benefits will not be seen as the body gets use to it , n by then it becomes just a regular thing .. hence diet needs to be changed at various level which can be done well under a professional ..

the lipid profile changes around evry 3- months .. so its best to get it redone .. specially if hyper-lipidemia or diabetes is a hereditary problem. and what about the thyroid ? did you get the test done?

my suggestion to you is , whether ayurvedic or alopathic, its best to try first in a natural way .. coz generally when we firmly decide to lose weight , we try to imply every thing possible and every thing we know in that one attempt .. and as a result the entire scedule becomes so hectic tht you would not be able to sustain it for more days .. hence use one tric at a time. whn that tric doesnt seemto work , then introduce a new one .. i think just diet and exercise will work wonders ...
    all the best !!

    hi deepa and anil...
actually the term diet is extremely under estimated by the world today. every one relates this term to starving, and putting yourself into under nourishment. but this is absolutely wrong. DIET actually refers to eating healthy and nutritionally balanced diet.
people only see DIET as a provision of calories. but they forget its most important function that is provision of important nutrients which are required for the normal functioning of a person's body. many are aware of the importance of nutrients as their deficiency causes severe medical conditions (ex. calcium- rickets, osteoporosis, vit A- nigh blindness) if not these, problems like protein energy malnourishment is very severe in many communities even in india.

there are many cases where the person being excessively obese cannot indulge heavily in workouts as there may be some physical limitations due to the weight, such people mostly suffer from pain in bone joints, knees and heels or back pain
it is advisable in such cases to first lose weight with the help of a gud diet regime until they actually can involve themselves in physical exercises. and it will be unfair if you forget the role that DIET plays in weight loss for the physically challanged.

Talking of practicality, every other person in the world can not work out at a pace that respected mr. micheal phelp does. and even he would agree to the role of specific nutrients in increasing stamina and prolonging point of exhaution.

so i say diet and exercise are both equally important and they go hand in hand .. comparing between both is like chosing between your left eye and your right eye.

    hi magumede,

Detox is not actually a correct way of losing weight but it has other benefits if done in a right way and for a right duration. As the name itself suggest , detox diets actually helps in flushing the toxins out of your body. these toxins accumulate in our body due to various reasons (stress, muscle wasting, excessive or long term medications, consumption of faulty food e.t.c)
As these detox diets are very low calorie wise.. we feel it would lead towards weight loss... but these diets though helpful when done for a day or 2 but are not nutritional adequate for any one ... hence please dont do such dietss for more than 2 days .. or else u will be left with a tired and dull feeling ... lose ur stamina n energy levels n feel week and once u return to ur normal routine, the entire weight will be recycled.. making it even harder for you to lose it.. rather explore more, there are so many healthy ways of losing weigjht without any side effects, where you can eat food and lose weight at the same time ... !!!

    hi srinu,

Actually the type of diet will depend upon your goal behind the workout, and type of workout. (ex- if you are doing weight training in a gym for body building , you need to take in more proteins in your diet ... )
