Perfect...what Himanshu wrote...just would like to add a point...also just observe the way you RUN...i mean landing and take off of your feet.
One more point to remember is certainly the weight and everything else whatever Himanshu has said...!!!!

I find oranges very very useful....one more thing what i do as a standard practice is i keep drinking more water (precisely Lemon juice with little salt and sugar) quite often atleast 6 to 7 hours before the long run....that really helps me not to drink much during the run and i feel really hydrated...i dnt even drink water if it is 10k run, done couple of half marathons-without water atall during the run (i dnt recomend it to anyone....!!!) i feel perfectly fine. To get the best benefit (above mentioned food) perferably at least 45 to 60 mnts before the run.

    Varun,
One need to take care of so many things to increase the PACE....whatever said above is true at the same time i would like to add couple of important subjcet to it....
    1)Strength training is very crutial
    2) Mike i am not very sure one can run at a high speed for 4-5 minutes....rather what i recommend is run at a high speed till you feel you are almost breathless and then stop...once the breathing about to normal start the process again...in a week you should do this only once.
    3) cycling really helps to build your endurance and lung capacity in turn that helps for speed and for the longer run.
    4) Varun also the point is what is your current speed and what distance you are focusing at that speed...and at any given point of time the right way of increasing is 10% of the either speed or distance more per week.

    Suchitra,
Intially if your focus is on building your strength, stamina and injury free running....this is what i would recommend...
    1) Skipping...
    2) Cycling...
    3) Light weight training...
Even once a week would be fine....you must be wondering why am i recommending this to you....the point all the above activities are a low impact ones on your Knees (compare to running...) and helps you to build your endurance and strengthens your legs that is very crutial for Running.

    Suchitra,
I completely agree with whatever said above and would like to add a point which is not reflecting above....
    1) If you keep doing the same activity body get used to it, initially you see results after sometime it slows....the solution is either you need to increase the intensity or change the activity.
    2) Next most important aspect is strength training.
