The New Year has just started and one of the most common resolution has been "I will lose weight this year". Millions of people will embark upon a weight loss diet to fulfill this resolution. Many of them might be successful but a lot of them may fail to lose weight. Then, there is also the problem of Weight Regain.

Why Diets Fail?

Millions of people worldwide know the truth about dieting: Losing weight is hard - and keeping it off is even harder. Research studies have consistently agreed that people go on diets and lose weight initially, only to eventually return to their original weight levels. This is why there are so many diet programs out there, because so many of them fail and dieter then moves on to the next one.

The usual response to this failure is "lack of will power". Some even blame it on their metabolism to avoid the guilt. Although in some cases it might be true but there are various other reasons which individuals do not address like:

  • Some foods, which do not suit the person, have to restrained for life; just avoiding them briefly does not work.
  • Losing weight is also about re-training the mind to think differently about food; if maida (white flour) based foods make you drool and do not force you to think about the  consequences of bad eating, you are hooked to weight for life.
  • Nobody tries to learn healthy delicious cooking; one will always eat fried pooris and samosas, anybody eaten a baked samosa!
  • Emotional eating is something we all fall prey to. This can only be beaten by a consistent effort towards changing ones ordinary lifestyle to a healthy lifestyle.
  • Training young is important to make it easy for the next generation to be liberated from all diets.
  • Everybody treats a weight loss program as a punishment, nobody tries to make it fun; if you do not like walking then swim, play, walk the dog etc. To the body it does not really matter if you are weight training or carrying the grocery. All forms of activities raise the feel good hormone called the endorphins, which eventually makes you feel good and helps you stay healthy.

You know what's important to you. If you like the idea of people looking at your thinner body, then imagine that happening. Use your imagination to motivate yourself, and you'll be more likely to stick with any weight loss plan. If changing our behavior was easy as making a decision to go on a diet, most of us would have changed many things about ourselves long ago. The truth is we need techniques that will help us bring that change or we are setting ourselves up to fail.

  • Jon De Ridder I believe that biggest reason diets fail is due to fact that after diet is over they go back eating the same foods the did before the diet. They needs to be a lifestyle change to become successful and keep the weight off.
