What to Avoid for Healthy Skin?

For the millions of people affected by medical skin conditions such as acne, rosacea, eczema or psoriasis, eating certain foods or consuming alcohol could aggravate their symptoms or trigger an unexpected flare-up. These foods are:

  • Saturated fats: Saturated fats are known to harm the cardiovascular system, but recent studies have also shown that a diet high in saturated fat increases the incidence of skin aging and wrinkling. Trans-fatty acids have extremely harmful effects on skin health and appearance. Foods that are heavily loaded with saturated fats like pizzas and French fries certainly put you at a greater risk of acne breakout. The more you consume these specific foods, the more likely you are to suffer from acne breakouts.

  • Caffeinated foods: Caffeine is a natural stimulant that can result in acne breakouts. If you regularly consume caffeinated products, you stand more chance of suffering from frequent acne breakouts.

  • White Flour Foods: White bread, white rice, and white pasta are less nutritious than their whole grain counterparts and may cause inflammation in the skin that can make you look older. Try cutting these items from your diet for two weeks and you will see your skin looks less inflamed and fine lines become less apparent.

  • Iodine in seafood: It is believed that iodine present in seafood tends to release certain toxins in the bloodstream that can trigger acne. So, stay away from seafood as much as possible to prevent acne breakout.

  • Processed Foods: Processed foods are loaded with sugar and additives. Sodas and other sugary drinks are not only bad for your health but can also rob your skin of essential nutrients.

  • Dairy products: Milk, cheese and yogurt have been shown to be a leading factor in acne outbreaks. Most people may not realize that they have intolerance to such foods and when the body cannot digest the waste element, it is released through the skin, causing acne. Simply avoiding these food products from your diet can help.

  • Red meat: It also has the same effect as dairy products. Although in a recent study, lean red meat had been shown to reduce the amount of acne in a group of teenagers. This study threw the book at traditional myths that meat actually caused acne. The study showed that this kind of food reduced the groups acne by 50%.

  • Chocolates: There is no scientific evidence today that eating foods such as chocolates lead to the development of acne. However, since chocolates contain large amounts of fats it might be advisable to eliminate these from your diet.

  • Alcohol: It is a known fact that excess alcohol consumption can put you at various health risks like heart problems, infertility and more. In addition to all those health risks, it also increases the production of certain hormones that cause acne breakouts.

  • Smoking: Smoking will age your skin. Your skin and lungs will thank you for cutting back or quitting altogether.

So we have looked at a couple of food groups to avoid so that we can have a healthy skin. Eating a healthy balanced diet is not only good for your skin, but your whole body too.
