Obesity is a rising epidemic these days. It's even more detrimental if you are a couple because a recent study indicates that if both partners in a couple are overweight or obese, they are more likely to have problems to conceiving a child. Weight gain can lead to so many health conditions, and if you're truly worried about the health of yourself and your spouse you can't help but to shed a few pounds.

Weight Loss Tips for Couples

It is not uncommon for couples to gain weight together. A working couple with a hectic lifestyle will find themselves overweight or even obese sooner or later. But what is more interesting is the fact that when couples work together towards weight loss, the potential for success is greater than when each partner pursues the goal on his and her own. Here are a few tips on how to make this weight loss venture work for you and your spouse or partner:

  • Get your partner on board: If one partner is not convinced about the worthiness of switching to a healthy lifestyle, it is best that the other partner should first get him on board. To win this war against bulge you need to team up first. If your partner is on board the hurdle may not be as steep because knowing that there is someone beside you who is going through the same thing makes everything a lot easier to bear. But, avoid comparing weight loss with your partner. Focus on your own progress to stay on track.

  • Plan together: A good start is to state each partner's goals. Talk openly with your partner about your plan, and ask for support. Do a bit of research together about your weight loss journey. Assess your strengths and weaknesses as a team and divide up the tasks so the best person is assigned the related task.

  • Go grocery shopping together: If a couple have decided to go on a diet together, shopping for food would be a very enjoyable and easy activity. Establish healthier eating habits by emptying your kitchen cabinets of refined carbohydrates, sugar, sweetened soft drinks, junk food, and other processed foods and replace them with brown bread and other whole grain products and more vegetables.

  • Have breakfast together: Studies show that breakfast eaters are less likely to be overweight than those who skip their morning meal. This will also give you a chance to bond with each other every morning before you set out to work.

  • Be active in the kitchen: Alternatively, each partner should prepare nutritious foods for the other. It is better to plan your meals ahead of time, making sure that you include a considerable portion from each food group. Prepare meals and experiment on recipes that the other one may enjoy and are healthy. During a weight-loss program it's easy to have simple go-to meals that you know the ingredients of and know how to count them into your daily meal plan. Eat healthy and with moderation.

  • Exercise together: Sign up for a gym membership together. At the gym, simply pick two cardio machines next to each other and work towards your individual goals. Create a more active lifestyle together by picking up group activities like hiking, cycling, camping, dancing, or just enjoying a walk at the end of the day.

  • Support each other: Couples working to lose weight or keep the weight off together encourage each other's progress and help each other through the challenges that come with losing weight. You should expect some bumps along the road but you should motivate or push each other to exercise if you are feeling too lazy to move. If you are weak on occasion, your partner should show strength and provide encouragement.

  • Reward: Weight loss and maintenance is a long-term effort that involves meeting a number of short-term goals. On achievement of a particular goal, give you partner a card, a gift to acknowledge your partner's success. Even words of approval and support, praise, and demonstrations of respect will help improve your partner's self-concept.

Losing weight is going to be a long and arduous process but with you and your partner working as a team, you can create great memories winning the battle of the bulge together. Remember, you are not only spending time with the one you love, but you are also helping each other keep fit and stay healthy.
