Who says that romance depends on the age of an individual? Romance cannot fade away with ageing! But many women suffer from low self-esteem after they reach their premenopausal and menopausal years. During this time, they undergo various hormonal changes which have an impact on their appearance as well. Women in their 40s and 50s feel that romance has flown away from their lives forever. This feeling deepens as they start finding that they are not able to draw the attention of their partners anymore!

Valentine's Day Resolution: Flirt After 50

These women sink into depression and feel that the concept of Valentine's Day has lost its meaning. So, how can they fight back the ageing process to spend a romantic evening with their partners once more? The signs of ageing appear in the skin and the skin happens to be the mirror to reflect all those changes which go on within a woman's system after a certain age. So, one has to take steps to rejuvenate her skin to get back the lost love, romance and attention of the partner.

Ageing should occur gracefully and here's how a woman in her 40s and 50s can vanish the signs of ageing from her skin:

  • Use Products with Natural Ingredients: Women in their menopausal years experience dryness of the skin due to lack of estrogen secretion. They should use products with natural ingredients like natural oils enriched with essential fatty acids. Almond and macadamia nut oil are two good choices. These oils can keep the skin moist without causing any irritation. But all women in their menopausal years would not experience dryness of the skin. Oily and combination skin would require lighter options such as sesame and jojoba oil. The popular choices for dry skin would include olive oil, macadamia nut oil, avocado and evening primrose oil.
  • Use Detergent Free Cleansers: Detergent-based or alkaline cleansers have a drying effect on the skin. So one should choose a cleanser which contains a moisturizing gel. If the skin is too dry, then one should opt for a milky cleanser with natural ingredients.
  • Use Alcohol-Free Toners: Normally, the alcohol based toners can make the skin very dry. But all types of alcohols do not cause a drying effect. The ones marked as Alcohol SD-40 are drying and so these are to be avoided. Toners with botanical extracts and antioxidants can keep skin smooth and supple.
  • Use Exfoliating Products with Soothing Ingredients like Aloe Vera: Exfoliation is an effective way to remove dead skin cells. Glycolic acid peels or other Alpha Hydroxy products are suitable for this process. Natural ingredients can diminish the appearance of age spots. Popular choices in this category include Licorice and Bearberry Extract. Glycolic acid products might be quite strong with the possibility of causing skin irritations. So it is better to use exfoliating products with calming ingredients like Aloe Vera and chamomile.
  • Use Quality Anti-agers: The various anti-ageing products appear in the form of creams and lotions. These products should be rich in antioxidants and should have moisturizing effects as well. Products containing Hyaluronic Acid are very good moisturizers. Antioxidants like green tea, vitamin E, grape seed extracts, R-Lipoic acid and vitamin C are very effective against skin ageing. These are all natural ingredients and there is no need to spend hundreds of dollars on anti-ageing creams.
  • Use Sun Block SPF-15: Sunrays facilitate the formation of fine lines and wrinkles. So one needs to use a sun block with a minimum of SPF 15. But use of sun block might prevent an individual from getting adequate amounts of Vitamin D via skin absorption. So it is very essential to include dietary sources of Vitamin D. Several types of oily fishes like salmon are dietary sources of Vitamin D. A sun block with ingredients like zinc oxide or titanium dioxide is a good option.
  • Consume at Least 6 Glasses of Water Per Day: Menopausal women have a tendency to put on weight during this phase. Drinking at least 6 glasses of water per day can aid in the issue of weight loss. Water would also help the skin to stay hydrated.
  • Perform Exercises Everyday: Exercise, especially weight bearing exercise (like brisk walking, jogging etc.) is very important for women who have crossed 45 years of age. Exercises improve the body's circulation and ensure the availability of vital nutrients to the skin cells.
  • Opt for Laser Resurfacing: Age spots, also called the liver spots are common causes of concern for the middle-aged women. They can opt for laser resurfacing to get rid of age spots. The procedure works by removing the top most layer of the skin and exposing the soft skin lying below.
  • Opt for a Facelift Procedure: A "facelift" procedure does not necessarily mean that the face would look unnaturally tight. If carried out in the right way, this procedure can yield desirable results.
  • Opt for Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT): Since hormonal changes are the main reasons behind skin aging in menopausal women, so HRT or Hormone Replacement Therapy can act as a remedy. One can enjoy youth and youthfulness for a long term with this option. But several controversies are related with the procedure and the choice would depend on individual opinions.

A woman in 40s or 50s, who thinks that life has come to the "sunset" point should note that there are still chances of finding love! And those who are engaged or married can still afford to get proper attention from their partners. Ageing cannot defy romanticism! It is a real fun to flirt after 40! This is a Valentine's Day Resolution to stay healthier and younger!
