Boosts Intestinal Health: Barley provides bulk and decreases the transit time of the fecal matter, thereby contributing to more regular bowel movement and decreasing the risk of colon cancer and hemorrhoids. The insoluble fiber of barley helps in maintaining the friendly bacteria in the digestive tract. It helps in the production of short chain fatty acids like butyric acid, propionic acid and acetic acid. These acids play an important role in maintaining digestive health and in removing the disease-causing, unwanted bacteria.
  2. Helps against Atherosclerosis: Barley is rich in Niacin (Vitamin B3). Niacin helps in reducing the total cholesterol as well as Lipoprotein level. Lipoprotein resembles LDL cholesterol ("bad" cholesterol) but is even more dangerous as it has the ability to easily attach itself to the blood vessel walls. Niacin also reduces platelet aggregation and keeps platelets away from clumping together and forming blood clots. Barley, being high in insoluble fiber, plays the same role.

One such lignan called the enterolactone is thought to have protective action against breast cancer and other hormone dependent cancers. A Danish study published in the journal of Nutrition suggested that women who were regular in the intake of whole grains had much higher level of this protective lignan.
