Getting wrinkles is a fact of life and unavoidable. As we age, the cells in the epidermis (outer layer of the skin) become increasingly thin and decreasingly sticky. As a result, our aging skin becomes thinner and drier and the natural repairing mechanisms in the skin work less quickly. We can't totally prevent wrinkling, not even with plastic surgery, but we can do a great deal in terms of limited how, where and how much they develop.

Tips to Prevent Wrinkles

Today, the market of anti-wrinkle products and procedures is worth more than a billion dollars. But just because anti aging skins care products costs a lot does not mean that it is an effective product. There are a lot of the ways in which you can prevent the onset of wrinkles. These can range from simple changes to your daily routine through to gradual changes to the way in which you live your life. Here are some simple tips to keep your skin looking youthful and wrinkle free:

  1. Balanced diet: While daily servings of fruits and vegetables are key to a healthy and balanced diet, pay more attention bright colors. Bright colors indicate a high volume of antioxidants that help you in the battle against wrinkles. Green leafy vegetables like spinach (palak) are rich in the antioxidant lutein and contains iron, which transports oxygen to your skin, and vitamin A, which helps prevent premature aging. Salmon and other deep sea fish contain omega-3 fatty acids, which nourish your skin and help reduce wrinkles.

  2. Drink water: Drink plenty of water and natural juices as this help to eliminate toxins from the body that cause wrinkles. Aim to consume at least eight glasses a day. When you drink enough water, your skin will remain moist and supple.

  3. Prevent sun damage: The best way to prevent wrinkles is to avoid episodes of excessive sun exposure. UVA and UVB exposure causes 90% of all symptoms of premature skin aging, including wrinkles. Sunscreens and sun blocks could also help prevent wrinkles. Wearing sunglasses protects the delicate eye-area from the sun's damaging rays.

  4. Skin care: Cleanse, tone and moisturize your face on a daily basis and you would find yourself with no wrinkles in the long run. Keeping your skin moist keeps it refreshed and elastic and therefore cuts down on stretching and sagging. A good anti-wrinkle cream always helps. Going for a facial once a month also helps keep skin supple.

  5. Sleep: Stress and awkward positions can also cause wrinkles. Get plenty of rest and try to sleep on your back as sleeping with your face pressed against the pillow can cause "sleep lines" that, over the years, can turn into wrinkles.

  6. Quit smoking: Heavy smokers are almost 5 times more likely to show excessive wrinkling than nonsmokers. Smoking damages collagen and elastin fibers that give your skin its strength and elasticity, as a result skin begins to sag and wrinkle prematurely.

  7. Exercise: Exercising regularly increases muscle tone and keeps the whole body healthy. Daily exercise of at least 20 minutes daily will help keep your body and skin looking healthy and youthful. Instead of the usual form of running on the treadmill, you can incorporate new forms of exercises, like kick boxing, yoga, meditation etc.

  8. Don't over-wash your face: Over washing your face removes natural oils from the skin which provides protection and moisture.

  9. Avoid excessive facial movements: Wrinkles are also caused by repeated facial movements. Try to avoid holding expressions like frowning, eyebrow raising, and squinting for extended periods of time as they will lead to wrinkling. Hard continued rubbing of your eyes can break down the tissue of the eyelids leading to permanently loose skin and the creation of fine lines and wrinkles.

  10. Eat Chocolates: Chocolates have flavonoids and anti-oxidant and can protect the skin against sunburn, improve circulation, keep the skin moisture and make them feel softer. However, moderation is crucial.

  11. Be happy: Be happy and don't take unnecessary stress. When the mind is happy and feels young, the body will automatically follow suit. Do things you enjoy, lead the life you want, and guaranteed you will see a reflection of your positive lifestyle and actions in the way you look & feel.

Wrinkle prevention starts early, but you can implement an anti-aging strategy at any age to stave off further damage to your face.
