Ayurvedic treatments in India had been in practice since the age of the Vedas. People throughout the ages have greatly benefitted from the healing effects of the natural ingredients, the bases of the Ayurvedic therapies. The ingredients include herbs and different oils. Oil Pulling Therapy is a very simple and an ancient Ayurvedic treatment, also known as Kavala Graham. Oil pulling or oiol swishing is the method of taking one table spoon of sesame oil or cooking oil and swishing it in your mouth for 15 to 20 minutes. This method has many health benefits. It cures headaches, bronchitis, tooth pain, thrombosis, eczema, ulcers and diseases of the stomach, intestines, heart, blood, kidney, liver and lungs. It is also considered as a remedy for gynecological problems. Chronic sleeplessness can also be cured.

Oil Pulling Therapy for Detoxification

Method of Oil Pulling

In the morning before having breakfast (i.e. empty stomach), take one table spoon of sesame oil or cooking oil in the mouth and swish (it is like gargling - move oil slowly in the mouth as if you are rinsing, then suck and pull through the teeth) it in your mouth for around 15 to 20 minutes. This method makes oil fully mixed with saliva. This process activates the enzymes and helps to remove toxins out of the blood. The swishing oil must not be swallowed, because it has now become toxic. As the swishing continues, the oil becomes thinner and whiter. After spitting out the oil, the oral cavity must be washed thoroughly with normal tap water and fingers or toothbrush.

How does oil pulling works?

The practice of oil pulling has been shown effective at removing bacteria in the mouth. A two week study conducted at Meenakshi Ammal Dental College and Hospital in Chennai found a definitive reduction in the Streptococcus mutans count that causes plaque after oil pulling therapy. The mechanism by which oil pulling therapy causes reduction in bacteria and plaque inhibition is not known, however, it is believed that viscosity ("thickness") of the oil could probably help in the prevention of bacterial adhesion and co-aggregation.

Here are some tips to be kept in mind while performing Oil Pulling:

  • Do it on an empty stomach. If anyone has problems of chronic ailments such as acne or Candida, those people should do oil pulling for more than one time with fresh oil for further cleansing.
  • Do not swallow the swishing oil because it gets contaminated with toxins. If you do swallow it, nothing will happen to you; it will just pass out through your bowels, but still it is essential to practice precaution.
  • The best oil for this purpose is sesame oil or cooking oil. You should experiment with different oils and see which one fits you the best.

Health Benefits of Oil Pulling

  • Helps to reduce skin problem like eczema and persistent rashes.
  • Gives good sleep.
  • Prevents dental problems by protecting against tooth decay and strengthening loose teeth and preventing Gingivitis or the swelling up of the gums.

Oil Pulling and Weight Loss

Oil pulling therapy detoxifies the body in a highly effective way and increases metabolism. Normally you may notice weight loss, if your body needs to trim down! Oil pulling will help in the restoration of normal weight of the body.

Side Effects Of Oil Pulling

Oil pulling method has been suggested by many Ayurvedic specialists, but during the process of swishing the oil absorbs some of the vitamins and minerals. So eating a balanced diet can act as a remedy.

According to some skeptics of alternative medicine, Oil Pulling has no special benefit to offer to us. But the immense popularity of Ayurvedic medicines and treatments cannot be denied either! There are many people who have been suffering from chronic ailments. They have adopted this approach after experiencing severe side effects from the conventional treatments.
