Typhoid is caused by the bacteria Salmonella typhi, usually from contaminated water or food. Patients take at least one month to recover. Patient suffers from fever, loss of appetite, body aches, diarrhea, constipation, and extreme tiredness. Patient needs to take complete bed rest and should be fed with some liquid diet at regular intervals.

To regain the strength and stabilize the gut, many home remedies are useful, such as:

  • Honey: Honey is good remedy for the weakness associated with typhoid. Honey mixed with hot water should be given to patient frequently. This provides a soothing effect to the intestine and boosts the patient's energy.
  • Home-made Tablet: Grind 4 basil leaves, 7 shreds of saffron, and 7 grains of black pepper with a little water and make small tablets out of this. Take one tablet 2 to 3 times every day with lukewarm milk. This gives good relief from typhoid fever.
  • Cloves: Boil 2 liters of water with 5 cloves (laung) in it till it is reduced to half. Strain and cool it. This water should be given to the patient frequently throughout the day for a few days. This gives relief from typhoid. Patient should drink plenty of plain water too, but see that it is boiled and cooled.
  • Coriander Leaves: Add 1 to 2 teaspoons of fresh coriander juice to 1 cup of buttermilk. This should be taken 2 to 3 times a day.
  • Sweet Lime: Drinking Sweet Lime (mosambi) juice is beneficial for people suffering from typhoid.
  • Banana: Banana reduces fever during typhoid. Mix the pulp of banana with some buttermilk and have it. Banana can also be had with honey. To some mashed ripe banana, mix a tablespoon of honey. This mixture can be had twice a day.
  • Californian Raisin: Eating Californian raisin (Munakka) is helpful to kill Salmonella typhi (typhoid-causing bacteria).
  • Orange: Oranges are good during typhoid as it makes the recovery faster, strengthens the immune system, as well as acts as a diuretic. Orange has a cooling effect and also helps in relieving the restlessness. Orange can either be taken as juice or milk shakes.

Maintaining cleanliness at home and your surroundings goes a long way in preventing diseases like typhoid. Typhoid is something that throws you off balance for at least 1 to 1-1/2 months. Taking antibiotics is very essential to cure the disease. However, natural home remedies like these help you regain your lost vitality faster.
