Do lunch breaks really exist in today's work-life? Do we really wait eagerly for the day's lunch break? The reality is that the concept is gradually fading away from the modern work life. We cannot even make out when the time alloted for an official lunch break flies out so quickly. We just manage to take some bites in the midst of our process of discharging official duties. And what do we eat? Junk foods with high amounts of sodium and trans fat. And in that process too, we keep on thinking about our professional goals! The lunch breaks lose their meanings!

Maximize the Usefulness of Lunch Breaks

Here are some ways by which you can maximize the use of a lunch break:

  • Go Out: Don't confine yourself in the same building! Utilize the lunch break to go out and spend some time outside. Breathe in fresh air and get disconnected from your job for a few minutes. This would refresh your body and mind. Spend some time chatting with your colleagues!
  • Daydream for a Few Minutes: A healthy daydreaming would nurture your levels of creativity. For example, you can think of innovative ways to handle a stressful project. You can also take your mind to some imaginary place where you always wanted to be.
  • Take Short Naps: Short naps during lunch breaks can prove to be "Power Naps". Today, the employers are showing a lenient attitude for this recharge process. This offers a refreshing response to the mind and reduces the tension levels.
  • Carry Frozen Foods: You can prepare these easy-to-cook meals in your break-room microwave. Just take care to note that these meals should contain less than 400 calories and at least 8 grams of fiber and 7 grams of protein. These low-carb, low-fat, organic vegetarian foods are quick energy boosters.
  • Cook Your Own Lunch: The best way to avoid unhealthy trans fat and undesirable calories is by preparing your lunch at home. Sandwiches made with whole wheat breads and stuffing like lean protein, fat-free cheese, tomatoes, broccoli, raw carrots and celery taste great! Boiled chicken makes sandwiches tastier!
  • Have Ready-To-Eat Soups: Ready to eat soups, especially the broth-based ones can give you a feeling of fullness with just a few calories. Cheese sticks really go well with bean and vegetables soups. Have skimmed milk with it. This is a quick way to supply necessary proteins and fibers into your body.
  • Choose Healthier Fast Foods: You might be invited by your office colleagues to join them for a fast food lunch. You cannot ignore them. Rather you should know how to make healthier fast food choices. For example, opt for broiled chicken breast sandwiches without mayonnaise or sauce and go for the grilled or steamed items.
  • Eat Mini Lunch: There is no need to supersize your lunch. You should take care to see if the necessary ingredients are present in your food so as to provide you with the necessary energy. For example, a cheese sandwich stuffed with raw vegetables,  skimmed milk and a broth-based soup are enough to satisfy your hunger in the afternoon.
  • Exercise a Bit: If you need to do certain personal jobs during your lunch breaks, then consider walking to various locations like convenience stores and banks. Even if you have to go to a nearby restaurant to have lunch, then travel the distance on foot.
  • Eat with Co-workers: Eating and enjoying food with other co-workers would inject fresh ideas into your mind. You can share some happy memories of your personal life with them - the day when you attended your kid's first prize distribution ceremony at school. Thinking about family would relax your mind and it would reduce job stress to some extent.
  • Have Healthy Food: If you stay away from fatty and sugary foods then you would stay in good health and this is essential to raise your productivity levels at work. This would in turn, boost up your motivation at work.

At the end, it can be said that lunch hours should be utilized for the exact purposes - mental as well as physical relaxations. We might be very busy, but still we can spare at least 15 to 20 minutes for ourselves. Going for short breaks would add to our productivity, innovativeness and motivation to work harder!
