Anything that we choose to eat should have some nutritional value. Fruit is no exception. True that eating 5 servings of fruit a day is beneficial to weight loss and maintaining sugar balance and so on, but it is all about timing. Let's first understand how the body's digestive system works over a 24-hour period.

How to Eat Fruits the Right Way?

Let's say you eat 2 slices of toast and then some fruit. The fruit is ready to go into the intestine but the toast in the stomach is preventing it. In the meantime, the toast is getting digested using acids and the fruit comes into contact with this acidic mass and begins to spoil. If it had been eaten first, as fruits digests faster, it would've gone into the intestines without it getting spoiled with the rest of the food. This creates gas and a tendency to burp. As a result, the stomach bloats and causes a sensation of heaviness. You may have heard people complain that they want to burp after eating watermelon or that banana makes them want to empty their bladder often. This is all a result of eating fruit after a meal.

The Right Way to eat Fruit

Fruit is a great detoxifying food as well as good supply of natural sugars. Eaten the right way, fruit is extremely beneficial to the human body. A 3-day fruit fast can do a world of good by cleansing the body of toxins and helping the digestive system to slow down. Here are some tips on how to eat fruit the right way and get the most benefit out it.

  • Eat fruit on an empty stomach. It can be at any time of day as long as you eat it on an empty stomach.

  • After eating fruit, leave a time gap of 30 minutes before you eat any other food.

  • If you've already eaten a meal, then wait for about 3 hours before you eat fruit, so as to ensure that all of the previous meal is digested before the fruit goes in.

  • Try to eat fruit mostly before noon. This helps to raise blood sugar in a slow and unhurried manner. Since the digestive system has been at rest through the night, eating fruit is a gentle way of restarting it in the morning.

  • Never eat fruit with other foods, only on its own.

  • Do no eat fruit as dessert after a meal. Always eat it before for best nutritional results.

  • Bananas and avocados are heavy fruit and you may want to avoid them first thing in the morning. Try eating these as afternoon or a midday meal as the digestive system will be more prepared for them.

  • Try your best to eat only organic fruit whenever possible. It is a healthier option.

  • Avoid canned, frozen and processed fruit. It contains large amounts of sugar, preservatives and other undesirable chemical additives.

These are some facts about fruit that may be new to you. But try out the tips and see if it works for you. If you've struggled with burping after eating fruit as dessert, you may wish to try eating it half an hour before meals. Whatever you choose, here's wishing you well!

I have a question is the calories in fruit fattening?? Is there any fruit I should stay away from and is there a fruit I should eat more of. Thanks.

  • Payal @haydee- you should avoid the fruits high in carbs like banana, chikku(sapota), mango, custard appple. instead opt for more citrus fruits like, orange, sweetlime, pineapple.

  • Haydee Papal I will not bother too much anymore and thanks for the quick reply to my previous question. I have one more to ask??? If I drink Limes in my water is it the same as the lemon water? Sometimes I get limes for free and rather use then then to have to buy Lemons, either way I will still buy lemons. Thank you

  • Tony Noble What about fruits with milk shakes
    May 27, 2010 at 1:51 PM
  • Payal @ haydee - hi again , The nutritional benefits of limes do not differ very much from those of lemons. They are both excellent sources of vitamin C, B6, potassium, folic acid, flavonoids and the outstanding phytochemical, limonene.
so noproblem u can have any of it.

@tony- scientifically there is no harm in mixing fruits with milk, rather they are an example of mutual supplementation, where in fruits high in vitamins and mineral are supplemented with the calcium and protein of milk, to provide a balanced nutritious drink !! though the combination of some particular fruits with milk is not really supported by some alternative medicine streams , like Ayurveda, bt scientifically no harm !!

  • Fjbell Payal I eat a lot of grapes(the ones with the seeds) I notice you stated that the glycemic index is high. Do I need to slow down on eating grapes? I've been eating a lot of fruits and vegetables only for a few days and I really feel good. I also drink 8 glasses of water and work out on the elliptical for 45 minutes a day 5 times a week. I also love this website it is very helpful. Thanks FJ Bell

  • Payal hi , F J .. no problem in eating red grapes, but please limit the quantity, and have them as a mid meal and not with any other food, this will raise ur blood sugar slowly. red grapes has gud amount of anti oxidant, which will boost your health.

  • Sim Hey Payal! You mentioned that fruit is good at any time of the day. I had read somewhere that one should not eat fruit post sunset. Is that true? Also, any recom on serving size? Obviously the serving size will vary for every fruit, but is there a count that one should stick to? Thanks, Sim

any food items used to reduce same for fast ......
    June 20, 2010 at 4:50 AM
  • Payal @sim - hi ... there are lot of notions abt eating fruits .. but for a person with normal blood sugar level , fruits can be eaten any time ... restrictions come on serving portions for diabetics specially , but otherwise you can have fruit in any quantity at anytime, obviously this is a very general statement, as the kind of fruit eaten also matters. citrus fruits are more micro nutrient packed hence can be consumed in gud quantities.... where as fruits like banana, chikko, custard apple are high in carbs , so should b eaten in limitations.
