Finding the right running partner may be the only thing you need to help with your running training consistency and performance. Though running is a solo activity, the training can get more enjoyable and exciting when it's being done with another person, especially if you're fit enough to fulfill the running partner conditions and terms.

How to Choose a Running Partner?

Benefits of Running with a Partner

Here are the benefits you can reap if you run regularly with a partner:

  • A running partner can provide you with consistent support and guidance for the training, especially if your chosen partner is more experienced and has been where you want to be.
  • Running can become tedious and monotonous. Therefore, having a running partner around can help you prevent this boredom factor.
  • Motivation comes handy when someone is relying on you to show up and do the workout. See, we human beings don't like others to get disappointed in us. Therefore, why not use this instinctive human behavior to our full advantage by running accountability programs with our fellow runners.
  • You could also challenge your running partner and see if there is much room for improvement. This is one of the beauties of working out with other people, each one sets a challenge that the other tries to beat. This also could be a great source of enjoyment for the training.

How to Choose a Running Partner?

Choosing a running partner may not be an easy choice. To help with that, here are few guidelines you need to follow when picking up the right partner:

Your Best Friend May Not Be The Best Running Partner

In fact, I highly encourage you to search outside of the pack and find someone who has the same running goals and aspirations as you do. Your best friend may not share the same vision. You can’t turn a frog into a prince. You will just annoy the frog and waste your time. Instead find someone who’s thinking seriously about your offer.

However, if your friend is serious about the resolution, then you can give a try and see how it will turn out. But just be keenly aware not to let your friends’ old ways to creep on the training session and compromise it. No one likes a whining malcontent. Nonetheless, if your endeavor turns out to be a success, you will definitely have the best time of your life, since you already enjoy passing time with your friends.

Your Running Partner Vision

When choosing a running partner, you need to make sure that you share the same training vision and goals. If you’re more advanced and want to push the ante up but have chosen a beginner runner as a partner, then he will definitely drag you down and encounter many problems and set backs along the way; and vice versa.

On the other side, if you're a beginner, you could ask someone with more experience to run with you, but you have to explain to him very clearly your situation so he can know what to do. Running with a mentor can help you develop good running habits and to start the path on the right foot.

Choose Multiple Running Partners

Yes you can cheat on your running partner; there is no article in the running law body that says otherwise. In fact, you could have a different partner for each workout of the week, as long as you keep your schedule intact and the running partners you working out do fulfill the above conditions.

Of course the above guidelines are mere suggestions. Don’t feel the need to follow them verbatim. You can run alone if you choose to. In fact, sometimes you may need to just go on a run by yourself and think back on your current life conditions. No one can deny you that.
