Tonsils are tissues found on either side of the throat, and these are a part of the human immune system. When viruses or bacteria attack the tonsils, they become inflamed and cause tonsillitis. Home Remedies for Treatment of Tonsillitis

Here are effective home remedies that use everyday products found in any home that can provide you with relief from the tonsil inflammation:

  • Vegetable Juices: Combine the vegetable juices of raw carrots, beet and cucumber in a 3:1:1 ratio and consume this drink. It is very effective in treating this condition.
  • Fenugreek (Methi) Seeds: Take two teaspoons of fenugreek seeds and boil this in water for half an hour. Allow this to cool, and use this water as a gargle. Make a fresh gargling solution of fenugreek seeds every day.
  • Fluids: Drink plenty of water and other liquids like clear soups, hot teas with added honey, and some frozen liquids like sorbets that can help counter the pain.
  • Salt Water Gargle: This is an excellent remedy for sore throat due to tonsillitis. Make a mixture of lukewarm salt water and gargle as many times as possible during the day. A teaspoon of salt added to a glass of water can serve as an effective gargle.
  • Lemon, Salt and Black Pepper Corns: Cut a medium sized lemon into two halves and on one half apply some salt and pepper, and make sure that it penetrates into the other half. Warm the lemon over some source of heat. Lick the juice slowly and do this at least two to three times a day.
  • Lime Water: Drink lots of lime water as it helps in soothing a throat that is inflamed. A pinch of salt and honey can also be added to enhance taste. The lime juice should be taken slowly, so as to allow the juice to linger for long in your throat and mouth.
  • Milk: Milk is an excellent home remedy for treating tonsillitis. Add a pinch of turmeric powder o a glass of warm milk and add a pinch of pepper powder. This should be taken just before you go to bed. Turmeric is very effective in reducing inflammation and is a natural anti bacterial remedy.
  • Banafsha Flowers: Add some Banafsha flowers to milk and boil them for some time. Filter the milk mixture, allow it to cool and drink it. This will help in reducing the inflammation and provide good relief. The mixture can also be applied on the throat at bedtime. To prepare a mixture for throat application, take some of the above mixture and mix it well in clarified butter in a pan over a flame. Apply this mixture on the throat and clean it by washing it away the next morning.
  • Viola Odorata Flowers: Boil 12 grams of Viola Odorata flowers in 50grams of milk, strain the mixture, cool the same and drink. The strained remnants should not be discarded. Instead fry them in some clarified butter and apply this to your throat and wash it the next morning.
  • Herbal Paste: Make a paste of equal amounts of horseradish seeds, barley seeds, mustard, jute, flaxseeds and radish seeds. Apply this paste over your affected tonsils.
  • White Pea Roots: Soak the roots of white pea in water and grind the same to a fine paste. Make sure that it is in the form of a drink. Drink up this mixture and eat a chapatti or Indian bread with ghee or clarified butter on it.
  • Tumbi: Take a bitter Tumbi and scoop out the pulp. Fill the emptied kernel with water and leave it aside for a couple of hours. Keep drinking this water in small quantities daily for at least a week. This will help in curing tonsillitis.
  • Dry Figs: Take some dry figs and boil them in water and then grind them to form a paste. Apply this paste over the enlarged tonsils.

All these are simple home remedies that can be safely tried at home and will not have any adverse side effects. They can be tried out with the help of material that will be readily available in the kitchen in every household.
