Many people find it very difficult to enjoy their road trips because of their motion sickness. This nausea, giddiness, and vomiting robs the fun from the travel. So, they often shy away from planning long trips by road with their families. They watch "travel and living" and satisfy themselves. They travel in their dreams and live at home...Ha....Are there any remedies for vomiting? Let us explore.

Home Remedies for Nausea and Vomiting

Causes of Vomiting

There are various causes of vomiting, such as:

  • Overeating
  • Pregnancy
  • Illness
  • Drinking too much alcohol
  • Acid reflux
  • Viral infection
  • Motion sickness
  • Stomach ulcer/cancer
  • Brain tumors
  • Brain injury
  • Appendicitis

Out of these, vomiting due to motion sickness, morning sickness, acidity, overeating, or over-drinking can be tackled or prevented by some home remedies and tips. The rest of the causes should ideally be left to a doctor.

What to do About Motion Sickness?

Motion sickness is the nausea (which could end up in vomiting) and disorientation some people experience when they are on a long-distance travel. If you also have the problem of motion sickness, don't eat anything just before you start the journey and avoid eating oily stuff during the travel. Other tips:

  • Keep a lemon handy, and keep smelling it. Drink lemon juice when thirsty.
  • Carry orange pieces smeared with a little black salt, and eat while traveling.
  • Ginger is a good remedy for vomiting. Ginger tea, gingersnaps, or ginger bread, anything helps. While traveling, instead of antiemetic medications, try taking ginger sticks or crystallized ginger.

Vomiting Due to a Hangover?

Monday morning, you get up with a hangover and terrible nausea. There is an important meeting to attend? What do you do?

  • Ginger is a life saver. Have some ginger tea that has very little sugar added.
  • Take just plain bread for breakfast. Bread will absorb the alcohol and stabilize your gut.
  • Mix one tablespoon of lime juice, one tablespoon of mint juice, and half a tablespoon of ginger. Sweeten this mixture with honey and have it.
  • Take half a lemon and spread some rock salt over it. Keep licking this until you run out of all the juice.

The Trademark Morning Sickness of Pregnancy

The euphoric feeling after learning that you are pregnant is soon replaced by the ill feeling you get with morning sickness. To get relief from this:

  • Have some powdered clove that is mixed with honey. Gives relief from the vomiting associated with pregnancy.
  • Eat some sweetened gooseberry. This will help stop vomiting during pregnancy.
  • Mix some roasted Bengal gram powder with water and take it to reduce vomiting.

Acidity and Indigestion

Ayurvedic doctors say that the vomiting we get because of acidity or indigestion is mainly due to excess "Pitta" in the body. To get relief from this type of vomiting:

  • Drink water melon juice mixed with sugar candy powder.
  • Drink a spoon of tamarind juice.
  • Drink sugar cane juice with honey.

Common Remedies

  • Drink a glass of cranberry juice. This soothes the gut.
  • Mix one teaspoon of grated ginger with one teaspoon of onion juice. This gives good relief from nausea.
  • Aniseed (saunf) is an excellent remedy for nausea. This can be taken in many ways. Make a brew by boiling 1/4 teaspoon of aniseed in 1/2 cup boiling water and drink. Sprinkle some aniseed on any soft-cooked veggies or baked apples and pears. Have it when you feel nauseated. Crush 1 tablespoon of aniseeds and steep it for ten minutes in 1 cup of boiling water. Add honey and sip this concoction whenever nausea strikes.
  • Roast some cloves (laung) and smell it to get rid of the vomiting sensation.
  • Boil a pinch of cinnamon (dalchini) powder with two cloves in water. Filter this and drink to get relief from vomiting.
  • Put half a teaspoon of cinnamon powder in one cup of boiling water, let it boil for some time and then strain and sip it to rid yourself off nausea. Do not try this remedy if you're pregnant.
  • Sucking on ice cubes is a good remedy for vomiting.
  • Mix some cumin powder and cardamom powder in a spoon of honey and eat it.
  • Boil cumin (jeera) powder and cardamom powder in milk and drink.

Keep these tips handy, so that the next time your husband plans a second honeymoon with you, you won't have to disappoint him!
