Procedure for Making Lemon Balm Ointment
Lemon balm ointments are made by heating the herbs with oils or fats. Ointments are most beneficial for application on affected parts as they provide protection to affected areas. Paraffin wax or jelly is the base that’s commonly used. These ointments should be placed in dark jars of glass and they have a shelf life of three months. The ointment or balm needs to be applied at least four times every day.
- 50 g of paraffin wax or petroleum jelly
- Glass jug
- Jelly bag
- 6g of lemon herb (dried)
- Pan containing boiling water
- Rubber gloves
- 50g to 100g capacity dark glass jars that are sterilized.
In a glass bowl, melt 50g of soft paraffin wax or petroleum jelly that’s been placed on a pan of boiling water. To this base add 6g of dried herb or if you prefer using fresh herbs then 15g would be perfect. Allow this to simmer for 15 minutes, and ensure that you stir continuously.
Secure a jug with jelly bag and pour contents into it. Put on rubber gloves to squeeze out the maximum ointment or balm. The molten balm is poured into sterilized glass jars immediately to prevent it from setting in the jug itself. Secure tightly with lids after its completely cooled, label and store in a cool dark place.
