We all have been brushing our teeth since childhood. Many of us may think that there is no big deal about it. You need to just move your brush all around your mouth and then you are done in a jiffy. Well, the experts have a completely different view about the art of brushing teeth and they opine that the entire process should last at least two minutes.

Brushing teeth does not only ensure good hygiene but good oral health as well. Irregular or improper brushing of teeth will result in bad breath, cavities and periodontal diseases (gum diseases). Brushing effectively includes the following:
Use of Right Way to Brush
Proper brushing should last at least two minutes. Most adults do not come close to brushing that long. Also, a proper sequence should be followed while brushing:
- Clean the outer surfaces of your upper teeth, then your lower teeth.
- Clean the inner surfaces of your upper teeth, then your lower teeth.
- Clean the chewing surfaces.
- For fresher breath, be sure to brush your tongue, too.
- Tilt the brush at a 45 degree angle against the gum line and sweep or roll the brush away from the gum line.
- Gently brush the outside, inside and chewing surface of each tooth using short back-and-forth strokes.
- Gently brush your tongue to remove bacteria and to freshen breath.
Use of Proper Toothbrush
Select toothbrush that has soft nylon bristles and a small head. Soft bristles will be gentler on your gums and will flex more easily to reach between the teeth. And a small headed brush will allow you to reach all areas of your mouth. Make sure that the toothbrush is wet slightly before brushing. This will protect your gums and will not get torn by sharp bristles of the toothbrush. Following are some tips in finding the correct toothbrush:
- It should have bristles that are softer rather than harder.
- The toothbrush should fit your mouth size. If you have a small mouth, choose a small toothbrush and if you have a large mouth, pick a large toothbrush.
- It should be easy to handle. Don't go for the complicated ones.
Use of Correct Toothpaste
Plenty of toothpastes are available in the market which caters to different needs such as cavities, gingivitis, tartar, stained teeth and sensitivity. Hence you need to pick the right one that suits you. It is always better to seek the help of your dentist to pick the right toothpaste for you. Just squeeze a pea size amount of toothpaste onto the toothbrush and work it on your teeth.
Replace Toothbrush
Don't even think of using the same worn out toothbrush for months together. Instead replace your toothbrush at least every three months to maintain good oral hygiene. And remember to replace your toothbrush after a bout of cold as sometimes the brush bristles con collect germs that can lead to reinfection.
Small Tips and Warnings
- Make sure you are brushing each tooth, your tongue, and your gums.
- Don't skimp on time, it isn't worth it in the long run.
- Make sure you are resting the toothbrush on your teeth, tongue, and germs and then moving it around. This process should be done without putting excess pressure on the brush and without "scrubbing" the items clean.
- Try alternate brushing techniques, such as brushing up and down, side to side and also in a circular motion.
- Don't forget to brush behind and around each tooth.
- Flossing is an effective addition to brushing your teeth.
- Brush after waking up and before going to bed.
- Brush after each meal, or at least brush twice daily.
Brushing teeth is the basic activity that we do every day and it is of high importance. Appropriate brushing dictates good oral health and so, invest a little time and effort to get fresh and sparkling teeth.
