There can be a number of reasons why your hair is thinning and falling. Some reasons relate to hormone imbalance, genetics and illnesses like cancer. Other reasons like unhealthy lifestyle with poor nutrition can also lead to hair fall. But, did you know that the use of shampoos and conditioners can also lead to hair fall and unhealthy hair? Shampoos and conditioners play a major role in hair loss. The very purpose of shampoos is to clean your hair and scalp and keep it free of everyday grime and dirt; instead most shampoos and conditioners are marketed to provide fragrance to your hair giving it some body and style.

Do Shampoos And Conditioners Affect Healthy Hair?

This is evident from the commercial advertisements on television featuring film stars tempting ordinary mortals to rush out and buy the particular product to use on their heads and expect the same results. Most of them are left disappointed, towards the end. Shampoos and conditioners are made primarily using chemical ingredients and these can cause hair loss and premature grey hair, also including hair follicle damage. Not all shampoos and conditioners are bad for your hair, though. Choosing the right shampoo makes all the difference.

How To Choose the Right Shampoo and Conditioner?

  • First be aware of the alkaline content in your brand of shampoo as alkaline based shampoos can cause damage to your scalp and hair.
  • A level of 4.5 to 5.5 is the normal pH balance for all hair types. Choose shampoos and conditioners that are well within this pH range so that they don’t cause harm to the hair.
  • Read the ingredients with care and any shampoo that promises to provide extra body to your hair will leave it damaged as it will be high in chemical content. Shampoos with high alkaline balance can cause color change and damage to hair.
  • Both your shampoo and conditioner should be within your pH balance. If this is taken care of, then no damage will be caused to your hair and it will remain healthy.
  • Your conditioner should help protect the cuticle layer and help maintain a proper pH balance for healthy hair.
  • Check out good quality shampoos and conditioners that contain natural ingredients.  Biodegradable shampoos and conditioners will prevent accumulation of dirt and clogging of pores.
  • Avoid using shampoos that contain animal ingredients.
  • Health care stores are the best place to look for good shampoos and conditioners that will leave your hair healthy and shining. Switching to shampoos and conditioners that are made from natural ingredients will help prevent hair loss.
  • Herbal based shampoos and conditioners are a safe bet for your hair. Herbal shampoos and conditioners can be made at home using everyday household ingredients. Try these out and save your scalp and hair!

A strong infusion of herbs and flowers can be mixed with your regular shampoo for electrifying effects. To get a strong infusion, boil a few petals of flowers or herbs in adequate water for three to five minutes. Saporin is nature’s soaping ingredient, and you can add your favorite herbs and flowers to this and use the mixture on your hair. Saporin is obtained from a plant. A strong infusion of Chamomile when added to shampoo will help lighten hair color.

It’s also an excellent conditioner as it softens the hair too. Infusions of mullein flowers or a decoction of white bark root will also produce the same effects. Beaten egg whites are great for normal or light oily hair. If you have dry hair, then use the egg yolk for same effect. If you are the busy type and can’t be bothered to make these at home, then you should look for these herbal ingredients in the shampoos and conditioners that you buy. This will definitely help to keep your hair healthy, glowing and full of bounce.
