College life is the most dynamic time of one's life where one is trying to balance hectic study schedule along with extra-curricular activities like theatre, college bands workshops, etc. There is so much to do like studying, parties to go to, homework to catch up on, exams etc. All this not only requires a lot of physical stamina but also a high level of mental energy.

Diet Tips for Hostelers

For most students the phrases "Hostel" and "healthy eating" never go hand in hand. What usually happens is that hostellers, due to the time crunch and lack of home cooked food, eat a lot of junk food from the street vendors or local café which not only spoils their complexion but also gives rise to acidity, gas, constipation and hair fall.

So how do You stay healthy on a hostel campus? The trick is to incorporate small, healthful habits into your campus life. By doing so, you'll feel better both physically and emotionally and will be better able to navigate the stressful college experience.

Here are some basic suggestions to remain healthy while enjoying your hostel life:

  • A yummy amla murabba (Indian gooseberry conserve) in the morning is a great way to start the day. Amla has the highest amount of vitamin C, being an antioxidant it increases the immunity and doesn't let you fall sick easily. It also has a positive effect on the memory and concentration.
  • 5 almonds (not roasted) in the morning is great for vitamin E which is good for memory and skin besides many other benefits.
  • Wash and eat one dry fig daily. It has the best body alkalizing effect which detoxifies the body, clears the skin, and keeps the body healthy.
  • Keep the healthy snacks in the room like channa + murmura + peanuts, cornflakes mixture, khakra, Soya or oat biscuits, roasted namkeen dals, baked chips etc. Keeping food in the room ensures that you do not eat expensive junk food outside regularly.
  • Drink 2-3 glasses of water when you wake up in the morning. It not only clears the stomach but also prevents acidity.
  • For people who keep an electric kettle in the rooms, try some green tea! The fresh aroma and light taste invigorates your day and it is also good for your stomach.
  • Outside the hostel, make the right choices, choose cold coffee instead of strong coffee; choose idli and dosa instead of maida sandwiches; regular roti instead of Nan etc. Prefer to drink coconut water and preservative free juices.
  • For people with sweet tooth, you can keep kishmish (raisins), prunes, dried dates, dried apricots which have a nice sweet and tangy taste, lots of nutrients and no harmful sugar.

Though the list is endless but even if few foods can be started out with, you will notice a remarkable difference. Remember, do the best you can! Take the effort to be as healthy as you can, and you'll enjoy your college experience all the more.
