Designing Tips to Stay Healthy in Home Office

By LifeMojo Team / September 15, 2011

Home is where the heart is, and sometimes even where the office is. Thanks to the Internet, a lot of people prefer working from home. It is definitely more economical and has a very comfortable environment. Home offices have become a really popular part of home renovation over the past decade. So, if you are trying to create an office area within your home, what do you need to consider?

Designing Tips to Stay Healthy in Home Office

Tips to Consider While Setting Up a Home Office

  • Invest in a Good Chair: Considering you will be spending long hours parked in your office chair, investing in an ergonomically designed chair should be your first priority. A beautiful, ergonomically designed, comfortable chair is worth every rupee. A good chair can be expensive, but it will prove to be worth it in the long run by making you more productive (you don't need to get up and walk around umpteen times to ease your back pain) as well as keeping your back fit as a fiddle (saving hospital bills later on).
  • Sensible Lighting: Make sure you have two types of light sources in your office; natural light and artificial light. These forms of light should both be present simultaneously. Perfect lighting will not put stress on your eyes, thus helping you work longer.
  • Air Circulation: Although space may be an issue in a home office, having a hot and stuffy office will make you feel tired and bored quickly, as well as compromising your health in the long run. Therefore, provide sufficient ventilation and circulation, as much as you can afford to. Have a window of sufficient size that can circulate the air and keep it flowing. Alternatively, you can install an air conditioner to do the same task.
  • Decorate the Walls: The constant staring at your computer screen can make your eyes tired and your eyesight weaker.  Experts are of the opinion that, when working, you should frequently shift from staring into your computer screen and look at something green, which will relax your eyes. Keeping this in mind, you can decorate your home office walls with paintings that have the predominance of green color, at the same time something that will inspire and motivate you to succeed. Wall art and decorations are a great way to improve the look of a home office. You could also place a nice painting or some other bright and happy picture to keep your motivation high.
  • Get Some Plants: Increasing the sight of green things around your home office can also be done by having some plants in the office that will make it feel more natural and inviting. Plants help circulate oxygen in the environment as well, thereby relieving the suffocation of small spaces. Plants will not cost you a whole lot of money, and there are all kinds of plants available that survive in various amounts of natural light.
  • Noise Cancellation Doors: You would need to prevent any distractions while you work. If space and money permits, you can build partition walls and doors that will also drown out the noise created by other family members while you work. You do not want to hear TV or your children screaming while working. Proper noise insulation helps you to concentrate on your tasks without wasting time. This will help you increase your productivity and efficiency of work.
  • Clean and Organize: Clutter creates confusion apart from the unsightliness. Other than that, many home offices aren't very big, so they need to stay clean and organized to make efficient use of the space. Hang floating shelves on the walls to get papers and office equipment off the desk. Clean the desktop of anything you don't use or need anymore. Once you have organized it, try to maintain the orderliness.
  • Placement of Computers: Place your monitor so that it is perpendicular to all of your light sources. This will diffuse and soften the light, and will also minimize glare on the screen. Wipe your screen off frequently to remove dust. Keep the wires of the computer hidden and together. You don't want wires lying all over the floor. This will again create clutter and confusion.

The more confident and at ease you are, the quicker your success will come. By implementing these simple tips, you can set up a nice home office which will increase your productivity that begets wealth and also improve your health.
