By LifeMojo Team / January 4, 2011

Celebrities in Hollywood love to live a true life by exploring everything that life has to offer! This might include experimenting with health with bizarre processes! Most of the celebrities claim that they are more inclined to the ancient ways of healing and rejuvenation. This was exactly the case with Demi Moore. She underwent a Leech Therapy to detoxify her blood.

Demi Moore's Leech Therapy

She said that she had always looked for the cutting edge of things that optimized well-being. She went to Austria to opt for a cleansing treatment of her body, and Leech Therapy was an integral part of it.

What is Leech Therapy?

The other name of this therapy is Hirudotherapy. This therapy denotes the use of medicinal leeches for the purpose of detoxification of the body. This treatment focuses on the release of blood from the deeper parts of the body and dates back to the medieval period. The therapy was also used for curing skin diseases. This was a very popular method of detoxification in medieval Europe.

In the modern day treatments, the European Medicinal Leech or Hirudo Medicinalis is commonly used. Today, these leeches have found new uses in the field of microsurgery. Medicinal leeches are used in reducing blood clotting, in relieving the blood pressure in the veins and in re-constructive surgeries. The therapeutic effect comes from the continued bleeding which results after the leech gets detached. Complications include prolonged bleeding, bacterial attacks and allergic reactions.

Demi explained the Basic Features of Leech Therapy:

  • The leeches deployed are not the ordinary swamp leeches, but are highly trained medical leeches.
  • The leeches were high-level blood suckers.
  • The leech therapy is meant for detoxification of blood.
  • This was a popular practice with the ancient Egyptian doctors.
  • It has found an application in plastic and reconstructive surgery to help in the reattachment of detached body parts.
  • While the leeches bite into the skin, an enzyme gets released into the blood.
  • Bleeding occurs for quite a long time and the health is optimized that way.
  • One can feel the worm crawling into the skin and biting into it. After the bleeding, a sense of relaxation comes and one should then concentrate on her breathing.
  • The leech would go on sucking blood till it becomes swollen and rolls away by itself.
  • She had to undergo a turpentine bath (organic turpentine or Oleoresin is applied in chest, waist or joints and this procedure which is very popular in Russia is used to treat diseases like hepatitis, high and low blood pressure, arteritis, cirrhosis, arthritis and sciatica) before the therapy.
  • She suggests women to have a Brazilian wax because the leeches do not like hair on the skin.
  • She revealed that the initial sensation would be bad while it would then be followed by a feeling of general wellness.

Miss Moore said that she had the intention to go for more sessions in the future as she expressed great satisfaction over the process. This detoxification was believed to give her a youthful look! After all, she had to fit well and look good with a much younger second husband, Ashton Kutcher!
