Almonds (badam) are considered to be the healthiest and most nutritious nuts of all. Owing to the fact that almond contains a great deal of nutritional value; it is termed as the source of well-balanced food. Almonds are a rich source of proteins containing fiber, omega-3 and 6 fatty acids, vitamin E, magnesium, calcium and zinc.

Benefits of Soaking Almonds

Many raw food advocates and Ayurveda believe that soaking almonds can increase the life and vitality contained within them. Here are some advantages that come from soaking almonds:

  • Easily Digestible: Almonds are difficult for some people to digest because of an enzyme-inhibiting substance in their brown coating. They are easier to digest and their nutrients are more readily available if they are first soaked overnight. Soaking almonds in water also makes them softer and easier to chew.

  • Removes Pitta-aggravating qualities: As per Ayurveda, the skin of almond is hard to digest, so the best way to prepare them is to soak them overnight and peel the skin off in the morning. If eaten without soaking, they can aggravate Pitta in the blood. Soaking also helps to make them lighter and easier to digest. Ayurveda also suggests eating almonds mixed with other foods such as milk, grains or vegetables, to avoid Pitta imbalance.

  • Reduce phytic acid: All nuts contain phytic acid in the outer layer or bran. Untreated phytic acid can form insoluble or nearly insoluble compounds with many metal ions, including those of calcium, iron, magnesium and zinc, reducing their dietary availability. Soaking decrease levels of this phytic acid.

  • Beauty benefits: Soak almonds overnight and then boil and blend them with whipped cream. This acts as a natural moisturizer and gives soft and supple skin.

  • Natural Scrub: By soaking the almonds in warm water overnight, they can also be used as a natural scrub. After soaking overnight, peel and grind them in the morning to make a rough paste. Mix this paste with fresh cream and use it as a scrub on face, rough knees and elbows. This paste will exfoliate the dead skin and leave a soft moisturised skin.

How to Soak them?

To soak them, dissolve some salt in water and pour over the almonds. Make sure you have enough water to cover them. Cover the bowl with something breathable like a cloth towel. Leave in a warm place (room temperature) for 10-12 hours. In the morning, you can drain and refrigerate them. This easy step can fit into even the busiest of schedules so that you can get all the healthy benefits of almonds.

Taking a little extra time to soak your almonds before eating is always worth the effort. So be sure you soak them first to obtain all the enhanced benefits of this power food.
