Motivation acts a driving force behind any kind of action. Motivation can be considered as the state of having the encouragement to do something. Motivation can act as a fuel which gives you the power to realize your dreams. Motivation can let an ordinary man do extraordinary tasks. But different people feel motivated through different ways. Some people honor love and derive motivation out of it, while others find money as a motivating factor. Motivation is required in professional as well as in family life. You may not realize how many types of motivation techniques are available for motivating coworkers, employees, children, yourself and even your life partner to make changes or to get things move in the right direction.

7 Types of Motivation: What Inspires You?

Different types of motivations work for different types of people. There are basically 7 types of motivation:

  1. Achievement Motivation: People with this type of motivation focus on attaining goals. It forms the basis for good life. This kind of motivation gives a dynamic personality and self respect to an individual. People generally set attainable targets which are not very difficult to achieve. By doing this, they ensure undertaking those tasks that can be achieved by them.
  2. Self Enhancement Motivation: If you do not get motivation from outside, find motivation from your own self. Self motivation is the ability to satisfy a desire, expectation or a goal without being influenced to do so by another person. Self-motivation is important for achieving success in work and personal life. According to Maslow's need hierarchy, people have an internal need of pushing themsleves toward self-actualization. As per this theory, human needs are arranged into a five-step ladder. Before higher-level needs are activated, certain lower-level needs must be satisfied. In ascending order, the needs are physiological, safety, social, esteem and self-actualization (self-fulfillment).
  3. Extrinsic Motivation: This form of motivation manifests itself positively as well as negatively. Positive motivation can appear in the form of a reward or a treat, and it can also be expressed in a negative sense by way of blackmailing or threatening. Extrinsic motivation works in both the cases and are effective.
  4. Fear Motivation: Motivation comes from many sources. Fear is also one of them. We are "fearful" of driving on the wrong side of the road. We fear walking too close to the edge of a cliff. We're afraid of poisonous chemicals. These fears actually motivate us to make good decisions concerning our safety! But don't allow it to become a habit that can control you. If you can't fight in a positive way, then use it creatively.
  5. Investment Motivation: We invest money to manage our finances and assets, and similarly, it is important to invest oneself physically, emotionally and financially in one task. The more a person is invested in a cause or task, the more likely he will be able to do the job well and complete it. For example, if one dreams to become a singer, he should have its total commitment towards attaining this goal. You need to work hard on what you want to achieve.
  6. Social Motivation/Socialization: Many people consider their social life as their biggest motivation. Their friends are their best motivators. The idea of being accepted among a group of people is their motivation for achieving the goals of life. Studies have shown that students influenced by social motivation tend to perform tasks so as to please those they respect or admire.
  7. Attitude Motivation: When you are positive, you can accomplish things, which were otherwise perceived as unrealistic by other people. A positive attitude can help you build strong relationships and to stay motivated. If you have a goal in mind and if you are lacking in the motivation part, then try having a positive attitude! This will boost up your motivation.

Motivation may come from your loved ones, peers, teacher or from your friends. But do you know who your greatest motivator is? You, yourself! After all, you are the one who has a goal in the mind. You are the one who has to realize the dreams. People close to you and the objects of your desire may only input some inspiration within you. The rest depends on you and your actions!
