7 Tips For Removing Dandruff

By LifeMojo Team / April 15, 2011

Those pesky white flakes scattered on your scalp are just so irritating. Dandruff is medically a pretty harmless condition. The worst that can happen is that you might get an embarrassing urge to vigorously scratch your head in the middle of an important meeting. But socially, dandruff spells sheer disaster.

7 Tips For Removing Dandruff

How on earth can you enjoy a dinner date when you are terrified that a shake of your head will shower dandruff flakes over the restaurant table? And what if you are having a working lunch with a colleague and you bend down over documents laid on the table, giving her a clear view of the specks of dandruff clinging to your hair. Simply horrifying!

But then, it’s time to take heart. Dandruff can be eliminated from your scalp and your life. It’s true that dandruff can be pretty stubborn and has an exasperating tendency to spring back even after you have got rid of it with the help of medicated shampoos and lotions. What you basically need to do is launch an attack on several fronts.

Go in for the over-the-counter shampoos and lotions, but combine it with other natural remedies and home treatments. Continue your anti-dandruff campaign vigorously for a considerable length of time. You will soon begin to see the difference.

  1. Rub some lemon juice into your scalp. It’s a home treatment that's time-tested for its efficiency. Squeeze out the juice of one lemon. Take a cotton ball. Dip it in the lemon juice and rub systematically all over your scalp. Be sure that no part is left uncovered. Keep the lemon on for half an hour before shampooing it off.
  2. Massage your hair with virgin coconut oil. Virgin coconut oil has some great anti-fungal properties. Massage well into your scalp and leave it on for some time. To increase the efficiency of this treatment, wrap a hot towel over your head. Remember the longer you leave the oil on, the more effective the treatment will be. Shampoo your head and comb out your hair gently.
  3. Use fenugreek (methi) to clear dandruff. Soak two tablespoons of fenugreek seeds in water. Leave them overnight. The fenugreek seeds will have softened considerably by the next morning. Mash and blend them up. Apply the paste to your hair. Leave it on for 20 minutes and rinse off.
  4. Just try out the plain hot towel treatment. Dip a thick towel in hot water. Squeeze out the excess water and wrap the towel as a turban around your head. Leave on for ten minutes.
  5. Use a solution of vinegar and water to rid of dandruff. Take one tablespoons of vinegar and mix it with six tablespoons of water. Wrap a light towel or a biggish handkerchief over your head. Keep this mixture on overnight. Wash it off next morning with a good herbal shampoo.
  6. Drink plenty of water. It flushes out toxins and helps with your dandruff problem.
  7. Brush your hair well. Bend down from the waist and keep your head down. Brush your hair from the nape of your neck to the top of the head. This helps to improve blood circulation and dislodges the dirt and dandruff flakes that have accumulated on your scalp.

If you are plagued by dandruff, one thing you require in abundance is patience. There is no single, sure-shot cure for dandruff. Nor is it likely that your dandruff problem will disappear overnight. However, a concerted effort combining medicated shampoos and home treatments will definitely help eliminate dandruff in the long run. But if the problem persists and becomes unmanageable, do consult a doctor.
