Are you thinking about running on the treadmill? Then keep that line of thought because you are on the right path towards achieving better mental and physical health. However, many beginner exercisers don't have a clue about how to do treadmill workouts. For that, here are the five tips you need to make your treadmill running more effective and enjoyable.

5 Treadmill Running Tips for Beginners
  1. Know Your Equipment: The first step toward making your treadmill running a success is to know the type of equipment you're dealing with. Therefore, before you jump on the machine, you ought to have a clear knowledge of its systems and functions. Many beginner exercisers rush in to the training only to get overwhelmed and disappointed with their performance later on. Consequently, before you start the workout, you need to educate yourself and learn to use the different stats on the treadmill control panel. You could also give the treadmill a test-drive and see how it really feels when running on it, this is especially true if you have never used one before.
  2. Make Sure You Warm Up: The proper warm-up is the cornerstone of all training programs -- treadmill running is no exception. Hence, before you break into a treadmill running pace, you should get your cardiovascular system and body muscles ready and up for the exercise. For that, you could do some brisk walking, either on the treadmill itself or outdoors; I tend to prefer to do it outdoors -- particularly in the early morning when the body needs sunlight to fully awaken and be functional. After the brisk walk, you could stretch out your leg muscle gently; this will help further prepare them for the workout ahead. And when you feel your body is well warmed, then you can break gently and incrementally into a comfortable running pace.
  3. Work On Your Running Form: One of the best training elements you can work on enhancing whilst running on the treadmill is proper running form and mechanics. Unlike running outdoors, running on the treadmill gives you the chance to assess your running form and check with yourself whether you are doing it the right way or not. Of course, this could only happen if you have a mirror near by to see your reflection while running on the treadmill.

However, if you are more diligent and really want to acquire the best running form possible, you could also videotape the workout session and analyze it frame-by-frame later on. You could as well get great feedback if you contact other more knowledgeable runners and ask them politely for advice on the matter.
  4. Use the Incline: When running on the treadmill you may consider increasing your incline to levels two or three in order to make your treadmill workout more similar to outside running. Increase the incline from 1% to 3% and see how that feels. Varying your incline settings will challenge you and help you make the most out of your training session. In addition, opting for a 3% incline or more simulates hill running, which is great for building stamina and strengthening lower body muscles.
  5. Make Your Workout Enjoyable: One of main reasons many people shy away from treadmill running is the boredom factor; apparently, running in one place can be tedious and boring. Fortunately, you could prevent your treadmill workout from becoming a bore by just making it more enjoyable and fun. Listening to uplifting music or changing your workout schedules and program are some of the best approaches toward a more enjoyable treadmill workout.
