With many people being on a diet, it is a little worrying why the success rate is so low!

10 common mistakes dieters make

After analyzing many cases, it was seen that there are some concepts that may be going wrong, leading to disappointment in weight loss.

  1. Starving during the day and eating the one and only meal at night: Though this may sound repetitive but it is so vital to weight loss and so frequently ignored, that one is forced to remind this mantra daily.
  2. Eating sprouts on a day when you are also eating cooked food : The combination of sprouts and regular cooked food is very fattening.
  3. Drinking juices (very fattening) and coconut water (good for kidney not so good when trying to knock off flab).
  4. Eating plenty of ketchup,pickles.
  5. Eating too many of the diet foods like diet chocolate, diet fizzy drinks, diet cookies(heavy on fat and loaded with aspartame which in high doses also prevents weight loss).
  6. Eating too many carbs : Often repeated but true because some people with carb sensitive profile do not lose weight on too much carbs despite a low calorie diet.
  7. Drinking mega-doses of milk and consuming lot of dairy in the form of curd, paneer, cheese :  As too much of dairy makes the elimination system sluggish, a sensible amount of dairy suits some people but not all blood groups.
  8. Drinking tea/ coffee more than 8 cups a day : Creates toxins within the system which stagnates weight loss.
  9. Drinking soup at night does not suit women as it promotes water retention and increases weight.
  10. Eating dals at night : Too heavy to digest and stays as calories.

And here are a few more...
  11. A lot of people consider dals as proteins whereas most dals have only 30% protein so their protein content is 1/3 that of egg and dals have 65-70% carbs (so a lot of dals can add to your carbs too).
  12. Doing fad diets like only vegetables and fruits for 7 days will  always lead to rebound weight gain.
  13. Worrying endlessly :  Sounds strange but true, the more you fret about weight loss the less likely it is going to fall, so cheer up, go slow and 1 year of consistent weight loss is far better than a lifetime of dieting !

  • No Cowsmilk I was interested to know how soup at night can increase water retention, surely drinking is good for hydration. If soup is bad, are you saying generally, don't eat at night.
Another point, is it bad for your blood sugar level if you do not eat after exercise, as I find I'm not hungry afterward, I'm just eating because I heard you should.

  • Payal @ cherry - hi soups in general should be avoided by women in the night time as they contain gud amount of salt , in case if u want to consume soups in the night, you can have it wit minimum or no salt, or with rock salt.

eating after exercise is right but not immediately .. should wait for 30- 40 min. and dun eat a lot, it has to be a small meal. as some ppl have the tendency towards hypoglycemia(low sugar) after exercise. this ofcourse depends on the age and the medical status of the person.

  • Archana Devanhalli, Senior Dietician @ Anika - I completely agree with u.. Because people who go on such kinda crash control on calories dont realize that the food that they eat in the night is not gettin completely digested also as they dont get time to do any kinda physical activity..

  • Swarna Latha Soup is a one-pot meal that contains all the nutrients well blend in it. So soups spiced and prepared at home can be consumed for dinner as it is light and easy to digest. Ready to eat soups should be avoided as much as possible as it contains MSG that has the tendency to elevate water retention and hence BP...
