Vermicelli (Semiya) Khichdi Recipe

A delicious South Indian cuisine, suitable for breakfast. As it is low in fat, it is ideal for cardiac patients and weight loss.

Ingredients (Makes 2 Serving)

  • Rice Vermicelli (Semiya) - 2 cups
  • Onion - 2 (Finely Chopped lenghtwise)
  • Tomato - 1 (Finely chopped)
  • Green chilly - 2 (Slit lengthwise)
  • Carrot - 1 (Grate finely)
  • Green peas (matar) - 1/4 cup (Optional)
  • Curry leaves - 1 string
  • Mustard seeds - 1 tsp
  • Urad dal (black gram) - 1 tsp
  • Gram dal (chick pea dal) - 1 tsp
  • Turmeric (haldi) powder - 1/2 tsp (Optional)
  • Oil - for frying
  • Salt - to taste

Instructions

  1. Heat oil in kadai, Add the mustard let it splatter, now add the urad and gram dal, saute till golden brown.
  2. Add the onion, green chilly, curry leaves, saute till transparent.
  3. Add the tomato, saute for 3 mins. After done, add carrot and saute for 2 mins.
  4. Now add turmeric powder, salt and 4 cups of water. Let it boil.
  5. When the water is nicely boiling, put the vermicelli and simmer for 3 mins. Stir occasionally.
  6. Cook till its well cooked and the water evaporates fully.
  7. Vermicelli khichdi is ready.
