Sometimes, an inner "beastliness" may come out of a smooth, polished friendliness. And this holds true not only for the "highly criticized" human nature, but for the "friendly beasts" themselves as well. Pets may show their original nature and may forget about their selfless bond with their masters. The salty taste of blood and flesh has the capability to dissolve all the ties.

Why Diabetic Individuals Should Exercise Caution While Sleeping With Pets?

People with diabetes may experience the original beast that resides within every animal. Loving and caring pets may soon show off their wildness and may chop off their masters' body parts. A medical journal mentioned about a woman who lost her leg after her dog chomped on her infected toe while she was fast asleep at night.

Researchers stated that people with diabetes should learn the importance of taking precaution with the injuries and their pets after this incident. Researchers at the Valley Presbyterian Hospital's Amputation Prevention Center in Van Nuys, California, informed about the inclination of the pets to lick wounds. If this matter is taken lightly, then licks would not take much time to get converted into bites.

There are reports of MRSA contamination in several diabetic patients. MRSA is a superbug which shows resistance to antibiotics and is transmitted via dog saliva. Researchers have observed that diabetes happens to be the biggest cause of amputations that result from something other than the accidents.

The incident which raised concerns about a diabetic's risks of keeping pets involved a 48-year old woman who had already lost one leg and was suffering from diabetic neuropathy, which caused her to lose sensation in her foot. Her infection on her big toe attracted her 2-year old Jack Russell terrier to bite on it.

She woke up in the morning just to realize that her pet dog had chewed off a portion of her big toe. A partial toe amputation could not help and the spread of infections and skin lesions compelled her to opt for amputation of her lower leg.

Researchers have suggested that diabetic individuals should cover their hands and feet while sleeping with their pets. They said that these individuals should take proper precaution to avoid infections and the possibilities of amputation.
