We exist because our heart beats. It is this constant rhythm which conserves the rhythm of our life. And all the duties, responsibilities, excitements, happiness, sorrow, challenges, success and failure are all trapped inside this small cage. When the beating stops, everything comes to an end.
Any sort of problem with the beating machine may invite troubles for you. In extreme cases, people may need to opt for heart transplantation as well. But it seems that this may not allow patients and his family to give out a sigh of relief with a recent study claiming that heart transplant patients become more susceptible to some serious types of skin cancers including melanoma and squamous cell carcinoma.
Researchers at the North-Western University examined 10 years of medical records concerning 6271 heart transplantation cases in 32 transplant centers located in the United States. They found that the incidences of skin cancers were more in individuals who have had undergone heart transplants in comparison to those who have never undergone the procedure. Such incidence was found to shoot up from 4 to 30-fold.
So what may be the probable reason behind such increased vulnerability? It goes something like this- an individual undergoing transplants need to take medications which prevent the body from rejecting the transplants. This medications work by suppressing the immune functions and this makes the patient more vulnerable to cancers.
Researchers have focused on the importance of patient education and the skin cancer screening in individuals who have undergone the heart transplantation procedure. They believe that this can bring down the risks of mortality in these patients to a considerable extent.
