A new research has claimed that women can get to know whether they will get affected with diabetes during pregnancy seven years before they conceive. The study had 580 ethnically diverse women as its subjects. Researchers suggested that routine assessments of blood sugar and body weight long before conceiving can help women to understand if they are at a greater risk.

Diabetes during pregnancy has been found to be associated with complications like cesarean sections (C-section) and preterm labor. Gestational diabetes can also cause health problems in the babies after their birth. Some of these issues include diabetes, obesity and metabolic diseases.
The research, conducted by scientists at the Kaiser Permanente Division of Research in Oakland, California, found that women with high blood pressure, high blood sugar and weight issues also had a high probability of getting affected with gestational diabetes.
Overweight women, with high blood sugar levels were found to be 4.6 times more likely to get affected with diabetes during pregnancy in comparison to the women who did not have these health issues. Researchers believe that the findings of the study will help to prevent gestational diabetes and various other conditions that take birth from it.
