Health Tip for 20 September, '09

To prevent or reduce heartburn (burning sensation in the chest) after meal, chew a stick of sugarless gum for 30 minutes.

Occasional heartburn is usually caused by eating too much food, too fast. The overstuffed stomach pushes acid-laden digestive juices into your esophagus (food pipe), making your chest feel as though it's on fire. Chewing increases saliva flow, which neutralizes stomach acid and washes it away from your esophagus.

Sucking on a piece of hard candy would also work in the same way. Just steer clear of anything that is peppermint-flavored as peppermint makes heartburn worse.
