A Japanese research involving nearly 20,000 Japanese adults with either normal blood pressure or high blood pressure has found that taking six deep and calming breaths in 30 seconds can reduce your systolic blood pressure (the higher number in your blood pressure reading) by nearly 10 mmHg. The researchers suspect that the blood pressure benefit was partially due to the calming effect on the sympathetic nervous system. To know if you are taking deep breaths, place one hand on your stomach (just above the waist) and feel the hand move out and back in as you inhale and exhale.
