Health Tip for 24 January, '10

People with high blood pressure, choose low-sodium products. On food label, look for words like unsalted, no-salt-added, sodium-free, etc.

Heavy sodium consumption has been linked to increase in blood pressure in some people, leading to high blood pressure. Therefore, people diagnosed with high blood pressure are often put on sodium-restricted diets. People with high blood pressure are recommended to limit the sodium in their diet to 1,500 mg per day. In order to reduce sodium intake, don't add salt to your food and check food labels for sodium. Some packaged food also comes along with labels like "sodium-free" or "salt-free" (less than 5 mg of sodium per serving), "low sodium" (140 mg or less per serving), "very low sodium" (35 mg or less per serving).
