Health Tip for 18 January, '11

If you have diabetes, get a comprehensive foot exam done each year to check for early signs of nerve damage, poor circulation or other foot problems.

Foot problems are a common complication in people with diabetes. Fortunately, most of these complications can be prevented with careful foot care. Get your foot examined by a professional at least once a year. However, if you are at high risk, get it checked every 3 to 6 months. During a foot exam, a healthcare provider checks for poor circulation, nerve damage, skin changes, and deformities. You should also mention any problems you have noticed in your feet. An exam may reveal decreased or absent reflexes or decreased ability to sense pressure, vibration, pin pricks, and changes in temperature.
