If you are running in the dark (early morning/late evening), avoid listening to the music while running so that you can hear oncoming cars, dogs etc.

Music tends to cut off your sense of hearing. With poor visibility in the dark, you will need to rely on your hearing while running to assess any risks such as oncoming cars, cyclists, dogs, or any other potential attacker.
