Health Tip for 20 March, '11

Get your bone density tested every few years to help diagnose osteoporosis (brittle bones disease) early, especially if you are 50 years or older.

Osteoporosis is a silent illness that often remains undiagnosed until a fracture occurs. The bone density test can serve as a benchmark for preventive efforts in people at risk for developing osteoporosis or fracture. People at risk include women with a family history of osteoporosis and related bone fractures, menopause, smoking, moderate to heavy alcohol use, malabsorption, hyperthyroidism (over-active thyroid gland), sedentary lifestyle etc.
