A 2006 study conducted on elderly Japanese people found that those who consumed more than 2 cups of green tea a day had a 50 percent lower chance of having cognitive impairment, in comparison to those who drank fewer than 2 cups a day. Researchers believe that this is probably due to the effect of EGCG (epigallocatechin-gallate) in green tea, which passes through the blood-brain barrier. In Japan, where most of the people drink green tea, we find lesser cases of Alzheimer's and Dementia in comparison to the other countries.
