
Triguna or three gunas - Satwa, Rajas and Tamas - are the three main components of the mind. The term triguna is composed of two words, tri meaning three and gunas meaning qualities. The mental powers exist parallel to tridoshas that control the body. These three gunas determines people's nature, belief and perception on the basis of their psychology and body constitution.
There is Satwa, Rajas and Tamas (all the trigunas) in every individuals. The dominance of a guna in that person determines the psychological constitution of mind. Any kind of imbalance results in various types of mental problems. Rajas and Tamas, as with the doshas, can be unbalanced by stress and negative desires as kama (lust), irshya (malice), moha (delusion and halucination), lobha (greed), chinta (anxiety), bhaya (fear) and krodha (anger). People with a balanced satwa and rajas adopt spiritual and holistic measures to improve themselves. For maintaining a healthy stare of mind and the body, balance of three doshas and gunas is required.
