    Hi Nivedita,

Yes it is hard bt if you r doing the right things than winter will instead help u in losing weight.

beacause of the cold wether, the body stuggles to increase its temperature (auto immune response)hence raising the BMR from usual. which is what the body exactly needs to lose weight, but the tough thing is that .. as the BMR rises so does our appetite ... n it seems hard to resist the warmth of a samosa or a garam jallebi ... and we r left with increased weight by the end of the season.what we dont understand is if we excersise just a little or just take a routine walk or do yoga or climb stairs even in the cozyness of our home or just buy a skipping rope n skip for 15 min 2 times a day, the BMR will rise even higher leading to weight loss.. and the hunger pangs can be well taken care of by hot and nutritious variety of soups .. or even green tea..Eat five to six small meals each day to cut down on food cravings and overeating. What you need to do is just try to keep to your routine as much as possible and not let Winter drag you down. Picking foods that tie in with the Holiday Season but are low in fat and fairly healthy,(http://www.lifemojo.com/healthy-recipes) will prevent you putting on huge amounts of weight.

Also skin temperature affects the growth hormone levels. Taking a hot bath for good 20-25 minutes with 38-39 degree Celsius will raise the growth hormone levels more than ten-fold. A single surge in growth hormone increases both the number of fat calories your body burns for energy and your metabolic rate [3]. That's why growth hormone therapy often leads to a reduction in fat mass. But again that doesn't mean hot water bath is the only solution to lose fat.
It is more of psychological view also that in winters you just want to get cozy and you sit in one place and do not like to move much. What to do sitting for a long time in one place, hence a tendency to munch and no control on diet. You are just killing time and making yourself comfortable too.
Remove the negative thoughts and make it a myth that winters are the season to weight gain. Prove it wrong !! :)
