Is Running bad for Obese persons

Kindly clear my confusion

7-8 year back Earlier i used to run appx 1 hour per session ( appx 5 km )then got some joint problem , consulted with doctor and advised imediately to stop running as it could harm and knee joints and docs advised me for brisk walk instead Jog -- i am 32 now

and have started now brisk walking appx 30 min / day , is it ok if i Jog 1km , as it would not affect my joints as i am feared it will not give me some joint pain.

    Hi Vijay,

Running can put lot of pressure on your joints specially if your weight is more than 100 kg. So, it is advised to do brisk walking (as your doc advised), cycling or swimming. They all don't put much stress on the joints and give almost the same benefits as running. Furthermore, cycling is used by many runners to increase endurance.

    Vijay,

I think both cycling and elliptical trainer will help in increasing endurance, but I guess cycling is a much better option.

Yes, these activities help you burn calories but may not compare with running (though you can cycle much longer than you can run, so effectively burning more calories). Also, all cardio exercises have been found to increase metabolic rate.

@vijay Cycling is certainly a better option for obese people. Running puts a lot of stress on the knee joint.

    Hi Vinay,
First thing , is to start wearing knee cap whenever you go for a walk. Try with jogging in between of your walking for 5 min first time. If you start getting pain then better you go for eight walking or cycling. Cycling wont put pressure on your knee joint so you can opt for it.
