You can loose weight only by following a low calorie diet and by doing exercise.Just by counting calories will not help to loose weight.

Yes, it is one of the best way to lose weight because if you calculate the calories of ur food approximately, you will get figure of ur calorie intake. According to that you can plan a calories. Along with calorie, do any exercise for 45mins to lose ur weight.
i do agree, counting the calories will help, but sometimes it difficult to do that. instead go for measuring spoons and cups. That way you will able to control the portion size.
