Fat cells are also known as adipocytes. The size and number of adipocytes helps to determine and classify obesity. Number of fat cells in an individual is genetically determined but the size of fat cell varies and is subject to change. Existing adipocytes usually becomes enlarged or filled with more lipid in a process called fat cell hypertrophy. Once the fat cells get saturated with lipid, adipose cellularity may be stimulated and can lead to increase in number of fat cells and the process is known as hyperplasia. When an individual goes for weight loss program which includes hypo caloric diet, increase in physical activity and exercises along with lifestyle modification, there is depletion in the lipid contains of the fat cells which causes shrinkage of fat cell. One can successfully reduce the size of fat cells but not the number of fat cell. Needle biopsy and photomicrographic techniques are used to extract and measure the average size of fat cells or adipocytes at selected body sites.
