Nicotine is one of the 4000 harmful substances that are present in a cigarette. Nicotine is present in the tobacco and is the main culprit for the addiction. A regular dosage cigarette around 10 milligrams of nicotine and with each puff, the smoker inhales 1-2 milligrams of nicotine. Nicotine has an effect on each system of the body. With each puff of the cigarette, heart rate increases, increase in blood pressure, increases metabolic rate and relaxes the muscles. Nicotine is such an effective drug that even a small dose of it on regular basis can bring the change in the organs and body systems. In long run, the smokers may become dependent on the nicotine i.e. they need their preferred dose of nicotine; otherwise the withdrawal effects can be seen.
