Smoking is responsible for 90%of cancer deaths. The cancers which are associated with the smoking are lung cancer, oesophagus, kidney, mouth, larynx, cervix and prostate cancer. The lung cancer is the most common among all the cancers. The risk of developing lung cancer is directly related to the number of cigarettes you smoked. The main toxic substances present in the cigarette are tar, nicotine and carbon monoxide.More than 4,000 chemical substances are identified in the smoke of tobacco. The production of a protein named FANCD2 is slowed down when lung cells are exposed to cigarette smoke and the low levels of this protein leads to the damage of the DNA and provokes cancer. This protein forms a protective layer on the cells and also repairs the damages occurred in the DNA.It also kills the damage causing cells, thus protecting the lungs from the smoking induced cancer.Few of the cancer-producing chemicals are absorbed into the blood and transported to other parts of the body and causing the cancer of the kidney, oesophagus, cervix and the other organs of the body.
