How can I stop gaining weight after quitting smoking?

I have recently given up smoking and afraid that I will gain weight because of it. What can I do to maintain my weight while I keep away from smoking?

    Quiting smoking does make you gain weight sometimes.

    Here are the reasons for that:
    1. Smoking increases metabolism slightly
    2. Smoking suppresses appetite
    3. After quitting smoking, people also eat more as a replacement activity to smoking.

    When you quit smoking, a gain of between 2 - 5 Kg during the first few months of cessation is normal. If your eating habits have remained the same as they were when you smoked, you can easily shed this small gain with a brisk, 30 minute walk daily. You can also avoid alcohol and switch to healthy snacking habits like fruits, vegetables. You should include a lot of water/fluids like green tea etc.

    Here are some sugar free solutions for you:
    1. Fresh juices
    2. Mineral water
    3. Apples
    4. Bananas
    5. Dry roasted peanuts
    6. Carrots
    7. Low fat or un-sweetened yogurt
    The trick is to eat at frequent intervals but with small servings. Eat slowly and try to be the last one to finish meals. Eating slow will help digest food properly. If the craving for food is just the substitution for smoke or kill the time, instead take a walk outside in nature, take a shower, water the plants, listen to music which will relax your restlessness. Eat mint, mouth fresheners, roasted corn, or piece of coconut, etc and such foods which take time to chew to kill that minute of craving not only for smoke but for fattening food items too.
