Its better to avoid diet soda during pregnancy. Diet soda contains artificial sweeteners mainly aspartame , saccharin and sucralose, which might pose health hazards to the newborn. You can have juices instead like Apple, cranberry, or any fruit juice.

Diet sodas often contain both caffeine and an artificial sweetener. Caffeine is prohibited during pregnancy. Anything in limit can be good, but It is better to avoid it just in case to be on a safer side.

Actually, some diet soda in pregnancy is okay. While I wouldn't advocate for a lot of artificial sweeteners in general (pregnant or not), there is no evidence that the amount consumed by most of the general population is harmful in pregnancy. That being said, there is not evidence that it is safe either, but there are NO reports of birth defects, etc associated with it. Caffeine in moderation (300 mg or less a day) is also not associated with problems in pregnancy. I'm an OB and pregnant, and I drink one cup of regular coffee a day.
