Treadmill Vs running on road

Hi, I am preparing myself for a 10K marathon/run. I have started my practice on a treadmill. Any idea if I do a 10K with in 65mins on a treadmill then how my performance would be on tar roads in Bangalore. Looking forward to your guesstimate.

I am planning to start the practice on a tar road to check my timing but thought before I hit the road I shld at least do a 10K on a treadmill. I still have 4months to go for the marathon.

    Hi Asit,
Timing would be different when you run on treadmill and when you run on tar road. Running on a road is much more challenge able than running on treadmill as we have to overcome hills ,sharp bends, weather. the impact of road put more effect on your joints than running on treadmill so its extremely important to maintain a good posture while running on road. Keep your Back and neck straight and look forward to avoid any strain on your neck and back. Also keep your shoulders a bit retracted to open your chest and take in more air but dont shrug your shoulders. Also, keep your elbows bent so as your forearm lies at your waist level. Keep these things in mind while running on tar road .
Best of luck for your marathon run.

    Hi Asit,
As you are preparing for the marathon, it is very important to consider, can treadmill running deliver the same benefits as training outdoors? Remember treadmill running differs from road running in a number of ways like:
    * When you are running on treadmill there is lack of wind resistance, even a slight breeze outside can cause resistance.
    * There is lot of difference in two surfaces, treadmills have smooth moving surface where as roads have uneven surface.
    * There is difference in ground reaction force offered by treadmill surface and the surface of road. (Difference matters a lot, when you are on long run.)
    * Training on treadmill makes much harder to pace outside. Research has shown that runners on treadmills take shorter paces.
    * If you are practicing on motorized treadmill, then treadmill helps to propel you forward, while the road does not. When you are outside you need to do more work in order to move forward.
    * Also some psychological factors need to be taken into consideration like indoor vs. outdoor, your comfort level etc.
I will suggest you to practice on the road instead of practicing on treadmill.
