First and foremost it is important to know as a helper to understand what heroin is, study it deeply to know aht are its effects and how harmful it is. It is always hard to learn that your friend or loved one is using heroin. You might well feel angry with them for doing it, ashamed by their choice as well as many other things. If you share the problem with others, their advice might be to cut them loose and have nothing more to do with them. Do not do this. Be supportive and do not doubt on them in case if they are not following what you asked them to as a helper/counselor/friend. Try not to be harsh on them. They will not stop using heroin just because you want them too. Explain them the importance of health and the negative impact of these drugs on their body and mental health as well. The one wants to help the drug addicts should know what the person is going through that stage to understand him/her more deeply. Treat them as before and not like a child or someone special. Do not make them feel that they are different in the negative sense or they are going through a problem. Be honest – speak to them about any worries you have without lecturing them. Let them know you are concerned as it will let them know that you care, and they also might be able to reassure you on certain things that you are worried about. Also limit the amount of time you spend with them or trying to help them. You can not let their addiction and problems take over your life.

Understanding what exactly addiction is, types of addiction because the treatment also varies accordingly and whether you are an addict yourself or you want to help your family member or friends also matters. It is important to note here that the person whom you want to help in case, is the person who is in denial stage. Try and find out the intensity of the addiction, how easy or how difficult it is for the person involved and the helper both. You alone probably can't do much in this case because you need to have an expert involved who is going to treat this addiction forever and not just give him a friendly advice which is obviously temporary and might not even work for them. There are many support groups everywhere now, try seeking help from them. Right kind of intervention is very important.
