Studies show that one needs 7 to 8 hours of good sound sleep for the body and mind to come to the rest. It is important to feel fresh once you wake up in the morning. Hence it also depends from person to person, one may sleep only for 6 hours and still feel teh energy in the morning and may require full 8 hours of sleep.
I agree with Anuja, that we need 7-8 hours of sleep to recover from all the stress i.e physical as well as mental. But in case you can not make out sufficient time to sleep, make sure that you take at least 6 hours of continuous sleep.
