All I know is that it works, not immediately, but long term, & only if you stick with it. Believe it or not. I'm living proof.
Though I haven't read it, there is a book by Sherry Brescia called 'Great Taste, No Pain' that revolves around the fact that the average American diet is much too acidic for our bodies & is downright destructive to it. Not only that, the average diet in US consists of the wrong combinations of foods put together. This causes our systems to go into an acidic hyperdrive. Keep in mind that Americans a hundred years ago didn't have all of the digestive problems that are so prevalent today. But then, they ate different, too; a diet which was more alkaline & better balanced, with more locally grown, organic fruits & vegetables, no chemical preservatives, colors & processing. Essentially, our bodies work best when fed a more natural, alkaline diet. Whereas, our bodies react poorly to an acidic diet, especially if it is also laden with numerous chemicals & is highly processed. The negative reactions of our bodies is acid reflux, irritable bowel syndrome, diverticulitis, constipation, & diarrhea, among other awful things. Our bodies are only reacting to what we eat & what types of foods we eat together.
I get free daily emails from Sherry's site that are smattered with the ideology, suggestions, answers to readers questions & helpful hints. In one of them, Sherry said that lemon when added to any food, though initially acidic, becomes alkaline during the process of being digested & so is very beneficial. I don't know all of the reasoning & details behind this statement, because as I stated, I only received the emails & haven't actually read the book, but YES, lemon is good for acid reflux. And it is something simple & easy thing to add or implement.
Personally, I used to suffer from heartburn everyday. Oftentimes, it was so severe that I would get a bursts of gas that would force the burning sensation all the way up through my permanently collapsed eutaschian tubes & onto the insides of my eardrums. After starting a regimen of squeezing the juice of a fresh, large lemon wedge into every glass of water I drink, I no longer have heartburn at all. It was the only thing from Sherry's emails that I have actively implemented, on account of it being so easy & simple, even when dining out.
And it worked. No more heartburn. No more pain.
I'll admit that once, for about a week, I had failed to drink the lemon water with my meals. It was completely unintentional. I had just chosen to drink milk, OJ, undoctored hot tea & other beverages instead of my usual lemon water. I was shocked when the heartburn came back suddenly & with no forewarning whatsoever. It was like an unwelcome visitor, a villain from my past, had returned, intending to torment me once more. I had become so unaccustomed to not having the heartburn that this reoccurrence took me completely by surprise. I mean I was taken totally off guard. The sensation was more unwelcome than ever, as I was no longer willing to suffer & endure any condition which I can easily control & prevent. I had no desire to return to my former lifestyle of constant painful heartburn, even waking to agony so severe it affected my ability to work, care for my family, socialize, show reverence, or relax. No way, not again. Not me anymore. Heartburn was no longer going to take control of my body, mind & life, not while there is something I can do about it. Immediately, I mentally backtracked through all of my recent meals & quickly realized that I had consumed absolutely no lemon water in nearly a week. I was astonished. This theoretically means that not only does lemon water help, but there is a long, short-term residual affect following continued use. The positive results from drinking lemon water lasts for days not just hours. Can either lowly old Tums or Proton pump inhibitors do that? The answer to that is no. No pharmaceutical product that I know of can do that. It is safe to say that I will giving the citrus industry business for the remainder of my life. Food is cheap & safer than drugs & doesn't need a prescription.
Sherry also explains in great detail in her book how the over-the-counter & prescription medications used to treat acid reflux & other conditions not only do not solve the problem but invariably make matters worse. Much, much worse. Basically, the meds either neutralize the acid in your stomach or stop your stomach from producing acid in the first place. But keep in mind that your body needs acid to digest food. That is the way the human body is made. Undigested or improperly digested food sitting in, or worse yet, rotting in your gut means more potential problems, gas, bloating, etc. Not only that, when a body can't properly digest food due to a lack of acid, the first chance it gets, it will create even more acid. This makes for a vicious cycle which usually causes a person to take even more meds. A body may even eventually agree to endure surgery. Sherry also informs you, in simple, easy to understand language, of the some of the side effects which your doctor probably won't or can't take the time to discuss with you. You'd be surprised what is in the fine print warnings that are sometimes hard for the average person to decipher & understand. She writes in a clear, conversative tone & basically educates the reader on the workings of the human body. Not only that, she empowers the reader to take control of their individual situation, instead of being a victim. She seems to genuinely hope that the reader chooses beneficial nutrition over medication. And even if they choose conventional medical treatment, she hopes a patient no longer has to follow a doctor's advice in blind faith, but with an understanding of the treatment & it's risks.
Sherry is so confident of alkaline nutrition that she even actually has a several day sample diet on her public website which follows the principles detailed in the book. This allows a person to test drive the idealogy without having to spend a dime on it. The idea is that once a person gets personal results, they will be more than happy to shell out some dinero for all of the facts. The book isn't expensive at all & I am sure that it is probably well worth the cost, many times over, considering the recurring & sometimes high costs for antacids, doctor visits, scripts, etc which it potentially replaces. I just haven't bothered to purchase the book, especially as her daily emails & tidbits given free-of-charge. For an author to actually openly advertise the solution is refreshing. She doesn't keep things secret until you buy a book or pay to subscribe to a service, like most writers. She doesn't even consider 'diets' healthy. I have yet to disagree with anything she's written since it all makes sense. She wants to inform people what foods are healthy for the body & in what combinations to eat them.
Like I kind of said, I think you'll find your answer in 'Great Taste No Pain' by Sherry Brescia.
